The New York Mets lost to the Washington Nationals 4-0 this afternoon in their home opener and dropped their record to 5-2. RHP Noah Syndergarrd had a strong first inning with two strikeouts, but ran into trouble in the top of the second inning. Syndergarrd gave up back-to-back walks and a wild pitch He then struck out catcher Yan Gomes, but gave up a run on a bunt ground-out to SS Wilmer Difo. He settled down after that with scoreless innings in the top of the third, fourth and fifth inning. In the top of the sixth inning, Syndergarrd gave up a solo homer to CF Victor Robles. He finished up by retiring the last three batters he faced. His final line was two runs on one hits with two walks and six strikeouts in six innings. LHP Justin Wilson came in next and threw a scoreless top of the seventh inning. RHP Jeurys Familia followed with a scoreless top of the eighth inning. RHP Seth Lugo continued his struggles after he allowed a double to 2B Anthony Rendon, a single to LF Juan Soto and sacrifice fly to 1B Ryan Zimmerman. Lugo was taken out after 12 pitches for RHP Tim Peterson. Peterson gave up a wild pitch and an RBI single to Difo. Lugo's ERA is now 12.27. Peterson didn't allow any more runs in the inning.
The bats were silent for the first four innings, but woke up in the bottom of the fifth inning after catcher Wilson Ramos singled and after a force-out by 3B Jeff McNeil, SS Amed Rosario reached on an error by Rendon. After that they weren't able to score any runs after CF Juan Lagares and Noah Syndergarrd both struck out. In the bottom of the seventh inning, McNeil and Rosario both singled with two outs, by pinch-hitter J.D Davis struck out to end the threat. In the bottom of the eighth inning, LF Brandon Nimmo walked, but 1B Pete Alonso and 2B Robinson Cano struck out.
The Mets are off tomorrow and return to action on Saturday April 6 at 1:10 p.m. against the Nationals.
