The New York Mets lost to the St. Louis Cardinals 6-3 this afternoon to lose two out of three games in the series and dropped their record to 11-10. RHP Noah Syndergarrd started out well with three strikeouts in the bottom of the first inning, but ran into trouble in the bottom of the second inning. Syndergarrd walked RF Jose Martinez and then gave up a single to catcher Yadier Moliana. He struck out CF Dexter Fowler, but gave up an RBI single to 2B Kolten Wong. Cardinals pitcher RHP Dakota Hudson hit a routine grounder to SS Amed Rosario, but Rosario made an error and allowed Hudson to reach base. 3B Matt Carpentar hit a shallow fly ball to hold the runner at third base, but 1B Paul Goldschidmt hit a two-run single. It got worse for Syndergarrd in the bottom of the third inning after he gave up a walk, bloop single, RBI ground-out and a double by Fowler led to two more runs. In the bottom of the fourth, he gave up an infield hit to Goldschmidt and a double by LF Marcel Ozuna led to another run in the bottom of the fourth. In the bottom of the fifth, he had an eight-pitch 1-2-3 inning and was then taken out. His final line was 5 innings, 6 runs (4 earned), 8 hits, 2 walks and 5 strikeouts. RHP Robert Gsellman came in next and has his best performance of the season with thee scoreless innings in the bottom of the sixth, seventh and eighth innings. Gsellman has looked a lot better in his last couple of outings and lowered his ERA from 3.27 to 2.57. It would be ideal if he could establish himself as the set-up man in the eighth inning to closer Edwin Diaz.
1B Pete Alonso continued his torrid start with a 444 ft solo homer to dead center field in the top of the first inning. The bats were quiet for the next two innings until the top of the fourth inning after RHP Noah Syndergarrd helped out his own cause with a solo homer. 2B Robinson Cano hit a solo homer in the top of the fifth inning. RF Michael Conforto added a solo homer in the top of the seventh inning.
The Mets next game is tomorrow night back home against the Philadelphia Phillies at 7:10 P.M.
