Mets vs. Phillies Game 23 Recap

Mets RHP Zack Wheeler (Credits to MetsMerizedOnline.com)

The New York Mets defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 9-0 tonight for their second consecutive win and improved their record to 13-10. RHP Zack Wheeler had his best outing of the young season with a dominating performance. Wheeler worked out a single to catcher J.T. Realmunto and struck out RF Bryce Harper and 1B Rhys Hoskins. After that, he got in a groove and at point struck out seven hitters in a row. He was in total control all night with an electric fastball and a sharp curveball, change-up and slider. He had confidence in everything he threw and was efficient and kept his pitch count down. If Wheeler continues to pitch like this, he could form a tough 1-2 punch at the top of the rotation along with Jacon deGrom. It will for him to leave in the offseason as a free-agent with outings like tonight. Wheeler's final line was 7 innings, 5 hits, 0 walks and 11 strikeouts. He picked up his second win and lowered his ERA to 4.85. LHP Luis Avilan came in next and threw a scoreless top of the eighth inning with a couple of strikeouts. RHP Jacob Rhyme closed it out with a scoreless top of the ninth inning.

In the bottom of the second inning, catcher Wilson Ramos walked to lead off the inning and SS Lios Guillorme singled with two outs. Zack Wheeler helped out his own cause with a two-run double. RF Brandon Nimmo hit a grounder through 2B Cesar Hernandez's legs to drive home the third run. In the bottom of the fourth, Wheeler capped out his amazing night with a solo homer. He became the first pitcher to hit a ball 100 mph and throw a pitch at 100 mph. In the bottom of the fifth, the offense broke it open after 2B Robinson Cano and RF Michael Conforto singled. Catcher Wilson Ramos hit a come-backer back to the ground to advance Cano and Conforto to second and third. LF Jeff McNeil was walked intentionally to load the bases. 3B Todd Frazier capped out the inning with a grand slam, his first homer of the season.  In the bottom of the sixth, CF Juan Lagares walked and both Cano and Conforto singled with two outs. Ramos followed with an RBI single.

The Mets next game is tomorrow night against the Phillies at 7:10 P.M. as they go for the sweep.
