Mets vs. Marlins Game 5 Recap

The New York Mets defeated the Miami Marlins 6-5 tonight for their second consecutive win and improved their record to 4-1. The offense jumped out to a fast start with five runs in the top of the first inning. LF Brandon Nimmo and 3B Jeff McNeil singled and RF Michael Conforto walked to load the bases. Catcher Wilson Ramos drove in Nimmo and McNeil with a two-run single. 1B Dominic Smith followed with a two-run single. SS Amed Rosario hit a RBI double. The bats went quiet until the top of the seventh inning. Ramos and Smith both singled and third baseman J.D. Davis walked to load the bases for Nimmo. Nimmo was hit by a pitch on the hand, which brought home the run, but he had to leave the game. Preliminary x-rays were negative. Smith and Ramos both had two hits tonight.

LHP Jason Vargas had to escape out of several jams, but wound up making it through five innings. His final line was: 8 hits, two runs, one BB, and 2 K's. He picked up his first win. RHP Robert Gsellman came in next and threw a scoreless bottom of the sixth inning. RHP Seth Lugo followed and gave up three runs in 1.1 innings. LHP Justin Wilson had to come on and threw 1.2 scoreless innings to close it out and he recorded his first save of the year.

The Mets next game is at 6:10 tomorrow night against the Marlins in the final game of the series.
