The New York Mets defeated the Miami Marlins 7-3 tonight and improved their record to 3-1 on the season. The Mets rallied back from one run down with one run in the top the sixth inning and four runs in the top of the ninth. LF Jeff McNeil drove in the first run of the game with an RBI single in the top of the second inning after RF Michael Conforto and catcher Wilson Ramos singled. In the top of the fourth inning, 3B J.D. Davis led off with a double and then moved to third base after a ground-out by Ramos. McNeil came up to the plate again and Davis scored on a wild pitch. CF Juan Lagares hit a solo homer in the top of the seventh to tie the game at three. In the top of the ninth inning, pinch-hitter Dominic Smith led off with a single and Lagares was hit by a pitch on his hand. LF Brandon Nimmo struck out, but SS Amed Rosario drove in the go-ahead run with a RBI single. 1B Pete Alonso broke the game open with a three-run homer.
LHP Steven Matz gave up three runs (one earned) on six hits with three strikeouts in 5.1 innings. RHP Tim Peterson followed with 1.2 scoreless innings. RHP Jeurys Familia threw a scoreless bottom of the eighth inning and picked up his first win. Closer RHP Edwin Diaz came on in the bottom of the ninth inning in a non-save situation and loaded the bases, but recovered and wound up striking out the next three batters he faced to end the game.
The Mets next game is tomorrow night at 7:10 P.M. against the Marlins.
