LHP David Peterson had a scoreless top of the first, but then ran into trouble in the top of the second.
Peterson walked 3B Matt Chapman to lead off the inning and then gave up a single to DH Wilmer Flores and a RBI double to 2B Casey Schmitt.
Peterson then gave up a RBI ground-out to CF Jung Hoo Le, but settled down that after and did not allow any more runs.
Peterson had scoreless innings in the top of the third, fourth, fifth and sixth and was then taken out.
His final line was six innings, four hits, two runs, two walks and four strikeouts.
RHP Ryne Stanek came in next in the top of the seventh and then gave up a RBI double to catcher Patrick Bailey.
RHP Rico Garcia threw a scoreless top of the eighth.
RHP Ryan Helsley made his Met debut in the top of the ninth and gave up two hits, but had three strikeouts with an electric fastball topping out at 101.4 mph.
RHP Edwin Diaz came on in the top of the tenth and gave up the game-winning single to former Met Dom Smith.
The Met offense was held scoreless for the first six innings against LHP Robbie Ray until the bottom of the seventh after 1B Pete Alonso hit a solo homer.
In the bottom of the eighth, LF Brandon Nimmo walked with one out and then SS Francisco Lindor followed with a single.
RF Juan Soto then drove in Nimmo with a RBI single and Alonso followed with a sacrifice fly to bring in Lindor as the tying run.
Pinch-hitter Ronny Mauricio followed with a walk, but then pinch-hitter Brett Baty grounded out to third to end the threat.
In the bottom of the tenth, Nimmo popped out to lead-off the inning and then Lindor was hit by a pitch.
Soto flew out and Alonso walked with two outs to load the bases.
Mauricio came up with the chance to win the game, but struck out for the last out.
The Mets next game is tomorrow afternoon, Saturday, August 2 at home against the Giants at 4:10 p.m.

Mullins has hit well recently with a .321 batting average in 57 plate appearances over his last 16 games.
He has struggled overall with a .229 batting average with 15 homers, 19 doubles and 14 stolen bases.
Mullins was an All-Star in 2021 and has a lifetime batting average of .250 with 101 home runs and 140 doubles in 784 games over eight seasons all with the Orioles.
He will provide some length at the bottom of the order and provide stability in centerfield instead of having Jeff McNeil and Tyrone Taylor platoon.
Hopefully Mullins can bring speed and power and excellent defense and a sparkplug in the lineup.

This move is just hours after acquiring Giants reliever RHP Tyler Rodgers.
Helsley has a 3.00 ERA with 21 saves this season.
He is a two-time All-Star and is coming off a career season a year ago with a MLB leading 49 saves and a 2.04 ERA and 1.101 WHP.

RHP Clay Holms escaped out of a based loaded jam in the bottom of the first, but was not so lucky in the bottom of the second.
Holmes gave up a single, HBP and walk to load the bases once again and then gave up a two-run single to 3B Manny Machado.
Holmes retired the first two hitters he faced in the bottom of the third and then SS Francisco Lindor made a crucial error and then Holmes gave up a two-run homer to LF Gavin Sheets.
Holmes picked up two outs in the bottom of the fourth and was then taken out.
His final line was 3.2 innings, eight hits, four runs (two earned runs), two walks and three strikeouts.
RHP Reed Garrett followed with 1.1 scoreless innings.
RHP Ryne Stanek threw a scoreless bottom of the sixth.
LHP Brooks Raley threw a scoreless bottom of the seventh.
RHP Rico Garcia gave up a run in the bottom of the eighth on a sacrifice fly by CF Jackson Merrill.
The Mets offense was shut down by RHP Yu Darvish and they managed only three hits for the entire game.
They went 0-2 with runners in scoring position leaving three runners on base.
The Mets are off tomorrow and return back to action at home at Citi Field on Friday, August 1 at the San Francisco Giants at 7:10 p.m.

Rogers is a submariner side-armer and has had a stellar season.
He has a 1.80 ERA and 0.86 WHIP and 38 strikeouts in 50.0 innings in 53 games.
Rodgers has been one of the best relievers since his rookie year in the 2019 season with a 2.79 ERA and 1.09 WHIP in 396.2 innings.
He is the second reliever that the Mets have acquired this last week after they acquired Orioles LHP Gregory Soto.
With the additions of Soto and Rodgers, the back end of the bullpen is much stronger along with RHP Reed Garrett, RHP Ryne Stanek and LHP Brooks Raley as the bridge to closer RHP Edwin Diaz as they head into the last two months of the season and into October.
