Mets Sweep Nationals 4-3 Powered By Torrens And Fine Effort by Christian Scott and Bullpen

The New York Mets beat the Washington Nationals 4-3 at Citi Field to complete the three-game sweep and improved their record to 56-69.

The Met offense was held scoreless for the first three innings and then came alive in the bottom of the fourth.

1B Jared Young led off with a single and two batters later, 2B Brett Baty hit a double. DH Jorge Polanco then drove in Young with a RBI ground-out and then catcher Luis Torrens followed with a game-winning two-run homer.

In the bottom of the fifth, SS Francisco Lindor led off with a single and then 3B Bo Bichette followed with a single. RF Carson Benge then grounded into a double play, but Young followed with a RBI double.

Mets RHP Christian Scott dominated through the first six innings allowing one run on three hits, but then ran out of gas in the top of the seventh.

Scott gave up a lead-off walk and after a ground-out, a RBI single to catcher Keibert Ruiz and a single to CF Jacob Young and was taken out.

LHP Nate Lavender came in next and picked up two key outs to end the inning. 

Scott's final line was 6.1 innings, five hits, three runs, two walks and seven strikeouts. He picked up his fourth win.

RHP Daniel Duarte followed and threw a scoreeless top of the eighth.

RHP Kodai Senga came on in the top of the ninth and closed it out with a 1-2-3 inning with two strikeouts on 11 pitches. Senga picked up his third save of the season.

The Mets next game is tomorrow night, Monday, August 17 at home against the San Diego Padres at 7:10 p.m.
