Mets Rout Guardians To Sweep Series 13-6 With Offensive Outburst

The New York Mets beat the Cleveland Guardians 13-6 this afternoon at Progressive Field to sweep their three-game series and improved their record to 50-66.

After a scoreless top of the first, 2B Marcus Semien hit a solo homer with one out in the top of the second and then 1B Eric Wagaman followed with a single and then catcher Luis Torrens followed with a two-run homer.

In the top of the third, 3B Bo Bichette led off with a walk and two batters later, RF Carson Benge hit a RBI triple.

Catcher Francisco Alvarez followed with a walk and then Semien hit a sacrifice fly.

In the top of the fifth, Alvarez walked again with one out and Semien followed with a double. Jared Young came up next to pinch-hit for Wagaman and hit a RBI single.

In the top of the seventh, Semien led off with a single and then Young grounded into a fielder's choice. 

Young then stole second and Torrens singled to advance Young to third. OF A.J. Ewing then hit a sacrifice bunt and SS Francisco Lindor came up next and broke the game open with a three-run homer.

In the top of the eighth, CF Luis Robert Jr led off with an infield hit and then Benge followed with a single and advance to second on a wild pitch.

Alvarez came up next drove in Robert Jr with a RBI double and Semien followed with a walk.

Young and Torrens followed with bases loaded walks and three batters later, Bichette reached on an infield hit which brought home a run.

Mets RHP Nolan McLean struggled with his command in the bottom of the first with a couple of walks which led to a two-run single by LF Angel Martinez. McLean was able to limit the damage to two runs by escaping out of a based loaed jam with two outs.

McLean was able to settle down for the next three innings needing only 39 pitches and retiring eight hiters in a row.

However, in the bottom of the fifth, he gave up back-to-back singles to RF Chase DeLauter and 3B Jose Ramirez and then gave up a three-run homer to 1B Nathaniel Lowe. and was taken out after the inning.

McLean's final line was five innings, eight hits, five runs, three walks and eight strikeouts. He picked up his eighth win and his ERA went up to 3.51.

LHP Nate Lavendar followed with a scoreless bottom of the sixth.

RHP Kodai Senga came in next and threw a scoreless bottom of the seventh.

RHP Xzavion Curry followed with a scoreless bottom of the eighth and then gave up a run in the bottom of the ninth, but was able to pick up last three outs and close it out.

The Mets next game is tomorrow night, Friday, August 7 at the Pittsbugh Pirates at 6:40 p.m.
