Mets Call Up Catcher Gary Sanchez

Mets catcher Gary Sanchez (Photo Credits to Syracuse Mets)

The New York Mets are called up catcher Gary Sanchez from Triple-A Syracuse.

Sanchez was signed by the Mets earlier this month after he played in the San Francisco Giants organization.

He struggled in Triple-A Sacramento with the Giants hitting .164, but did well in Triple-A Syracuse hitting .318 with one homer in 32 at-bats.

Last year with the Minnesota Twins Sanchez hit .205 with 16 homers in 128 games.

The corresponding roster move for Sanchez has not been announced yet.

Hopefully he will be able to hit some homers and provide some power as a back-up catcher and help take pressure off rookie catcher Francisco Alvarez.

The New York Mets beat the Tampa Rays 8-7 tonight in 10 innings at Citi Field to snap their two-game losing streak and improved their record to 21-23.

The offense did not do much for the first six innings until the bottom of the seventh after LF Mark Canha was hit by a pitch with one out and then 3B Mark Vientos followed with a two-run homer to tie the game.

In the bottom of the ninth, DH Daniel Vogelbach led off with a walk and RF Starling Marte followed with a hit by pitch.

3B Brett Baty then struck out and Vientos flew out to centerfield, but then catcher Francisco Alvarez came up and delivered a three-run homer to tie the game.

In the bottom of the tenth, 2B Jeff McNeil led off with a single which advanced CF Brandon Nimmo to third after Nimmo started out the inning on second base as the "ghost runner."

Two batters later, 1B Pete Alonso capped off the comeback with a massive three-run walk-off homer for his Major League leading 15th homer of the season.

RHP Kodia Senga had the best start of his Met career allowing one run on three hits in six innings.

RHP Adam Ottavino came in next and gave up a two-run homer to 2B Brandon Lowe.

RHP Stephen Nogosek came on in the top of the ninth and gave up a RBI single to DH Randy Arozarena.

Mets Call Up Top Prospect Mark Vientos

Mets DH Mark Vientos (Photo Credits to Richard Nelson)

The New York Mets are calling up top prospect Mark Vientos.

Vientos has crushing it this season  at Triple-A Syracuse hitting .333 with 11 doubles, 13 homers and 37 RBI.

He has also cut down on his strikeouts going from 28.6% last year in Triple-A to 20.5% this year.

Vientos has struggled defensively in the past and has improved at third base and first base, but is blocked by Brett Baty at 3B and Pete Alonso at 1B.

Vientos will most likely DH since the Mets have been lacking power there due to the struggles of Daniel Vogelbach.

Wherever Vientos plays, his power will be desperately needed for a team that is ranked in the bottom third in the National League in homers. They also have the fourth-fewest doubles in the league and fifth fewest runs in the National League.

It will be exciting to see what kind of spark Vientos brings to the starting lineup which will hopefully lead to some much needed wins.
