Mets Beat Marlins 3-1 to Sweep Doubleheader Behind a Two-Run Homer By Michael Conforto

Mets RF Michael Conforto (Photo Credits to Adam Hunger-AP Photo) The New York Mets beat the Miami Marlins 3-1 tonight at Citi Field to sweep their double-header and fourth consecutive win to improve their record to 65-67. The offense was held scoreless for the first three innings, but came alive in the bottom of the fourth after 3B Jonathan Villar led off with a single and CF Brandon Nimmo followed by reaching on an infield single. 1B Pete Alonso struck out, but then RF Michael Conforto hit a two-run homer. SS Javier Baez followed with a single and then 2B Javier Baez delivered a RBI double. RHP Trevor Williams cruised through the first four innings, but ran into trouble in the top of the fifth after Villar made an error and then Williams allowed a base hit that went off his foot. Williams that gave up a double to 1B Jesus Aguilar and was taken out. His final line was 4.1 innings, 4 hits, 0 earned runs (1 unearned), 0 walks and 4 strikeouts. LHP Aaron Loup came in next and walked 2B Jazz Chisholm Jr, but was able to 3B Isan Diaz to ground into a double play to end the inning. Loup picked up his fourth win. RHP Seth Lugo came in next in the top of the sixth and worked around a hit and walk to throw a scoreless inning with two strikeouts. RHP Edwin Diaz followed and closed out the top of the seventh with a 1-2-3 inning to pick up his 27th save. The Mets next game against the Marlins is postponed due to rain and their next game is on Thursday, September 2 against the Marlins at 7:10 p.m.
