Mets Lose To Giants 7-5 After Bullpen Gives Up Homers Late

Mets 1B Pete Alonso (Photo Credits to John Hefti-USA Today Sports) The New York Mets lost to the San Francisco Giants 7-5 tonight in San Francisco for their fourth consecutive loss and dropped their record back to .500 at 59-59. LHP Rich Hill started out well with three scoreless innings, but ran into trouble in the bottom of the fourth after he gave up a double to catcher Buster Posey and a RBI single to the following hitter LF Darin Ruff. Hill then gave up singles to 3B Evan Longoria and SS Brandon Crawford and was then taken out. His final line was 3.2 innings 6 hits, 2 runs, 0 walks and 2 strikeouts. RHP Miguel Castro came in and retired pinch-hitter Tommy La Stella to end the inning. Castro stayed in for the bottom of the fifth and gave up a one-out pinch-hit double to Alex Dickerson and then a two-run homer to RF Kris Bryant. RHP Jeurys Familia came on in the bottom of the sixth and threw a scoreless inning. RHP Trevor May followed in the bottom of the seventh and got immediate trouble after he gave up back-to-back homers to 1B Brandon Belt and Bryant and after retiring the next two hitters, he walked Longoria and then a RBI triple to Crawford. RHP Seth Lugo threw a scoreless bottom of the eighth inning. The offense was held scoreless for the first four innings, but came alive in the top of the fifth after CF Brandon Nimmo led off with an infield single and then RF Michael Conforto followed with a walk. 1B Pete Alonso then drove in a two-run triple for his first triple of the year and broke the Mets streak of 68 consecutive games without a triple, the most in MLB history. LF Dom Smith followed with a sacrifice fly. The bats didn't do much for the next few innings until the top of the eighth after 3B J.D. Davis led off with a hit and then SS Jonathan Villar followed with a two-run homer. Their struggles with men on base continued after they went 1-7 with runners in scoring postion and left six men on base. The Mets next game is at the Giants tomorrow night at 9:45 p.m.
