Mets Lose To Marlins 5-1 After Kodai Senga's Struggles Continue

The New York Mets lost to the Miami Marlins 5-1 at Citi Field this afternoon to lose three out of four games in the series and dropped their record to 73-64.

RHP Kodai Senga gave off to a tough start in the top of the first and he gave up a one-out walk to CF Jakob Marsee and then gave up a single to catcher Agustin Ramirez and a sacrifice fly to SS Otto Lopez.

After a scoreless top of the second, Senga gave up a two-out double to Marsee in the top of the third and then a two-run homer to Ramirez.

In the top of the fourth, Senga gave up a lead-off double to 1B Liam Hicks and then a RBI single to the following hitter LF Heriberto Hernandez.

In the top of the fifth, Senga gave up a lead-off double to 3B Javier Sanoja and then Edwards reached on an infield hit and Sanjoja scored on an error by 3B Brett Baty and then Senga was taken out.

LHP Brandon Waddell followed and threw 4.1 scoreless innings to save the bullpen.

The Met offense did not do much against RHP Sandy Alcantara outside of the bottom of the seventh after 2B Jeff McNeil led off with a single, DH Mark Vientos followed with a walk and two batters later, CF Cedric Mullins grounded into a fielder's choice to bring home a run.

They went 0-7 with runners in scoring position leaving seven runners on base.

The Mets next game is tomorrow afternoon, Monday, September 1 at the Detroit Tiges at 1:10 p.m.

Mets Lose To Marlins 11-8 After Peterson Allows Eight Runs

The New York Mets lost to the Miami Marlins 11-8 at Citi Field this afternoon and dropped their record to 73-63.

LHP David Peterson got off to a rocky start in the top of the first after he gave up a lead-off single to 2B Xavier Edwards and an infield hit to the following hitter to SS Otto Lopez. Two batters later, Peterson gave up a RBI double to LF Heriberto Hernandez.

Peterson then gave up a two-run double to the following hitter 1B Eric Wagaman.

Peterson walked the following hitter 3B Connor Norby and two batters later, gave up a two-run double to LF Joey Wiemer.

Peterson had a scoreless top of the second and then gave up three more runs in the top of the third on a RBI single by LF Jakob Marsee, and a RBI single to Wiemer  and was then taken out.

RHP Chris Devenski came in next and and gave up  RBI ground-out into a double play and picked up the last out of the inning.

Peterson's final line was 2.0 innings, eight hits, eight runs, three walks and one strikeout.

Devenski stayed in and did a fine job of saving the bullpen with three scoreless innings, one walk and three strikeouts.

LHP Brooks Raley threw a scoreless top of the sixth.

RHP Trevor Rogers came in next and gave up the game-winning run in the top of the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Norby.

LHP Gregory Soto threw a scoreless top of the eighth.

RHP Edwin Diaz gave up a two-run double to Norby in the top of the ninth.

In the bottom of the first, SS Francisco Lindor led off with a homer.

In the bottom of the second, 2B Brett Baty singled with one out and later in the inning, scored on an error by catcher Augustin Ramirez.

In the bottom of the third, RF Juan Soto led off with a walk and stole second and two batters later, LF Brandon Nimmo doubled.

3B Mark Vientos followed with a three-run homer.

In the bottom of the fourth, RF Juan Soto hit a solo homer with two outs.

In the bottom of the sixth, CF Cedric Mullins led off with a walk and two batters later, Soto hit a two-run homer. Two batters later, Nimmo doubled with two outs, but Vientos flew out to centerfield.

In the bottom of the seventh, McNeil led off with a triple, but was left stranded after Baty grounded out to second, pinch-hitter Starling Marte struck out and Mullins lined out to right to end the threat.

In the bottom of the eighth, Soto walked with one out, but then Alonso struck out and Nimmo grounded out to SS to end the inning.

In the bottom of the ninth, McNeil walked with one out and two batters later, catcher Hayden Senger singled, but Mullins struck out to end the game.

The Mets next game is tomorrow afternoon, Sunday, August 31 at home against the Marlins at 1:40 p.m.

Mets Rout Marlins 19-9 in Jonah Tong's Solid Debut

The New York Mets beat the Miami Marlins 19-9 at Citi Field and improved their record to 73-62.

The Met offense got off to a fast start in the bottom of the first after SS Francisco Lindor led off with a walk and stole second and RF Juan Soto followed with a two-run homer.

1B Pete Alonso followed with a single and then 3B Mark Vientos walked. LF Brandon Nimmo came up next and delivered a three-run homer.

In the bottom of the second, Soto singled with two outs and Alonso followed with a two-run homer. Vientos then singled and Nimmo walked. DH Starling Marte followed with a RBI single and then 2B Brett Baty walked. CF Tyrone Taylor capped off the inning with a two-run double.

After scoreless innings in the bottom of the third, fourth and fifth, Nimmo homered to lead off the bottom of the sixth.

In the bottom of the eighth, Vientos led off with a homer and Nimmo followed with a single. Marte then walked and Baty reached on an infield hit to load the bases. Taylor followed with another two-run double and catcher Luis Torrens put the exclamation point on the offensive outburst with a three-run homer.

RHP Jonah Tong made his MLB debut and had a quick first inning with only six pitches needed.

Tong gave up a lead-off double in the top of the second and retired the next three hitters.

He had his first career strikeout in the top of the third.

In the top of the fourth, he worked his way out of a second and third one-out jam by picking up a strikeout and ground-out.

Tong was let down by his defense in the top of the fifth and had to overcome two fielders choices and two errors which led to three unearned runs and four total and was taken out after the inning.

His final line was five innings, six hits, four runs, one earned run, 0 walks and six strikeouts.

Tong showed a lot of poise and composure and featured his fastball topping out at 95-96 mph with a knee-buckling curve ball and change-up.

He will only continue to get better as his career progresses.

RHP Ryan Helsley followed with a scoreless top of the sixth.

LHP Jose Castillo threw a scoreless top of the seventh and gave up a run in the top of the eighth.

Torrens came in the top of the ninth and allowed four runs and picking up only out.

RHP Ryne Stanek followed and got the last two outs to close it out.

The Mets next game is tomorrow afternoon, Saturday, August 30 at home against the Marlins at 4:10 p.m.

Mets Lose To Marlins 7-4 Due To Poor Defense And Bullpen

The New York Mets lost to the Miami Marlins 7-4 tonight at Citi Field to snap their three-game winning streak and dropped their record to 72-62

RHP Clay Holmes got into immediate trouble in the top of the first after he gave up back-to-back infield hits and then a sacrifice fly to catcher Agustin Ramirez.

After a scoreless top of the second, Holmes hit 2B Xavier Edwards to lead off the top of the third who then stole second and advanced to third on a grounder. 

2B Jeff McNeil then made a poor throw to home with the infield in instead of going to first which allowed Edwards to score. Two batters later, 1B Pete Alonso made a poor throw to Holmes who dropped the ball which rolled into foul territory to score the tying run and LF Troy Johnston to advance to second. 

Holmes then gave up a RBI single to the following hitter 2B Otto Lopez.

Holmes was able to settle down after that with scoreless innings in the top of the fourth and fifth and came out after the top of the fifth.

His final line was five innings, five hits, four runs, two earned runs, one walk and two strikeouts.

RHP Ryne Stanek followed with a scoreless top of the sixth.

LHP Gregory Soto came on in the top of the seventh and gave a lead-off single and was also let down by the defense and Alonso and LF Brandon Nimmo made errors.

After a passed ball, two batters later, Soto gave up an infield hit to Lopez to bring in a run and was then taken out.

RHP Kevin Herget came in next and gave up a sacrifice fly to DH Heiberto Hernandez.

Herget stayed in for the top of the eighth and ninth and threw two scoreless innings.

The Met offense got off to a fast start in the bottom of the first after SS Francisco Lindor led off with a single and two batters later, Alonso doubled. Nimmo followed with a two-run double.

The only other runs came in the bottom of the fifth after RF Juan Soto walked with one out and then Alonso followed with a two-run homer.

The offense struggled all night with men on base going 2-6 with runners in scoring position leaving seven runners on base.
