Mets Agree On Contract Extension With Jeff McNeil

The New York Mets agreed to a contract extension with 2B Jeff McNeil this afternoon for four years-$50 million with a club option that could increase it to a five-year deal for $63 million.

McNeil is now under team control through the 2026 season with a team option for the 2027 season.

He is coming off an excellent season with a .326 batting average with nine homers in 62 RBI with 39 doubles.

McNeil has developed into one of the cornerstones of the franchise as a two-time All-Star with a batting title and Silver Slugger Award.

Now that he has has been extended, he will help solidify the defense up the middle for years to come with SS Francisco Lindor.

It's a great start to extend McNeil and CF Brandon Nimmo earlier in the offseason. Hopefully 1B Pete Alonso will next.

Mets Sign Outfielder Tommy Pham

The New York Mets have signed outfielder Tommy Pham for one year, $6 million.

Pham had a down season last year with the Reds and Red Sox with an 87 OPS+ and .374 slugging percentage.

However, he hit well against left handed pitching with a .784 OPS.

Pham fills an important need for the Met roster as a fourth outfielder and DH.

He can also DH and will compete with Francisco Alvarez, Daniel Vogelbach, Brett Baty and Darif Ruf for that spot..

 

Mets Sign Reliever Adam Ottavino

 The New York Mets signed RHP Adam Ottavino for a two-year deal worth $14.5 million with a player option for the second year.

Ottavino is coming off a fantastic year as the set-up man to star closer RHP Edwin Diaz with a 2.06 ERA in 65.2 innings.

He allowed only 15 earned runs all year and struck out 30% of the hitters he faced.

Ottavino strengthen the Mets bullpen which already includes Diaz and RHP David Robertson and could help to form one of the best bullpens in the National League.

Mets Sign Catcher Omar Narvaez

 The New York Mets signed catcher Jeff Narvaez tonight for a one-year $8 million deal in 2023 and a $7 million player option in 2024.

Narvaez struggled last year for the Milwaukee Brewers hitting only .206 in 84 games.

He is now one of four catchers on the Met roster along with James McCann, Tomas Nido and Francisco Alavrez.

Mets Sign Japanese Starting Pitcher Kodai Senga

 The New York Mets signed Japanese starting pitcher RHP Kodai Senga tonight to a five-year deal worth $75 million.

Senga has played in Japan's Nippon Professional Baseball for the past 10 years on the Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks.

He was a three-time NPB (Nippon Professional Baseball) All-Star and five-time Japan Series champion with a record of 87-44, 2.59 ERA, 22 holds, one save and 1,252 in his 10 years with the Hawks.

Senga is coming off a career season with an 11-6 record in 22 games pitched with a 1.94 ERA as a starter and 1.56 ERA in 144 innings.

His pitching repertoire includes a fastball that averages at 95-96 mph topping out at 100 mph, as well as a forkball, cutter and slider.

His forkball has been called the "ghost fork" in Japan.

Now with the signing of Senga, this helps round out the Mets starting rotation with RHP Justin Verlander and RHP Max Scherzer at the top followed by Senga, LHP Jose Quintana, RHP Carlos Carrasco, LHP David Peterson and RHP Tylor Megill.

It's nice to have plenty of depth in the rotation in case of injuries.

It will be fun watching Senga to see what he can do in the big leagues after dominating in Japan for many years.

Mets Sign Reliever David Robertson

 The New York Mets signed reliever RHP David Robertson a one-year $10 million deal.

Robertson has pitched for five teams over the course of his 14-year career including nine years with the Yankees.

Last season, he went 4-3 for the Cubs and Phillies with a 2.40 ERA and 81 strikeouts in 63 2/3 innings with 20 saves.

Robertson will serve as the perfect set up man in the eighth inning to star closer RHP Edwin Diaz and brings much needed experience and depth to the bullpen and has shown he can pitch in New York. 

Mets Re-Sign Brandon Nimmo

 The New York Mets re-signed CF Brandon Nimmo to an eight year $162 million deal tonight.

Nimmo has been a Met for the first seven years of his career since he was drafted by the franchise in 2011.

He has made a lot of strides defensively in centerfield over the course of his career.

Last season, Nimmo had the best offensive season of his career hitting .274 with 16 homers in 151 games.

He also features a terrific eye at the plate with 71 walks last year and and finished with an excellent on-base percentage of .385.

Nimmo brings a lot speed at the top of the order and is the perfect lead-off hitter.

His enthusiasm and energy is infectious and it's only fitting that he will remain a Met for years to come.
