Holmes was able to make it to the top of sixth, but then walked DH Christian Yelich and retired CF Jackson Churino on a fly-out and was then taken out.
RHP Reed Garrett came in next and got into immediate trouble after he gave up a RBI double to 2B Brice Turang to tie the game and then gave up a single to LF Isaac Collins and walked 1B Jake Bauers to load the bases.
It all fell apart for Garrett after he gave up a grand slam to the following hitter SS Joey Ortiz and then Garrett was taken out after the inning.
LHP Brandon Waddell came in next in the top of the seventh and threw a scoreless inning, but then gave up a lead-off homer to LF Isaac Collins in the top of the eighth.
Waddell stayed in for the top of the ninth and threw a scoreless inning.
The Met offense was held scoreless for the first two innings until the bottom of the third after CF Jeff McNeil led off with a hit by pitch and then catcher Luis Torrens followed with a single to advance McNeil to third.
2B Brett Baty drove in McNeil with a sacrifice fly.
In the bottom of the fourth, RF Juan Soto led off with a walk and stole second and then 1B Pete Alonso drove in Soto with a RBI single.
The offense was unable to do much after that managing only two hits.
