The Met offense was held scoreless for the first five innings wasting a two-out triple in the top of the second and a based loaded one out opportunity in the top of the fourth.
They finally broke through in the top of the sixth after RF Juan Soto lead off with a walk and stole second and then two batters later, DH Starling Marte walked.
2B Brett Baty then grounded out to 1B Rafael Devers who was unable to turn a double play and picked up only one out instead of getting out of the inning.
3B Mark Vientos followed by delivering the game-winning two-run double down the left field line.
LHP David Peterson worked his way out of trouble in the bottom of the first and second by getting double plays in back-to-back innings to escape the jams.
Peterson had a 1-2-3 bottom of the third and then gave up a run in the bottom of the fourth on a fielder's choice, but was able to limit the damage to only one run.
Peterson was able to work out of more trouble in the bottom of the fifth and sixth and came out after the sixth.
His final line was six innings, eight hits, one run, three walks and four strikeouts.
He picked up his seventh win and lowered his ERA to 2.83.
RHP Reed Garrett followed with a 1-2-3 bottom of the seventh.
RHP Ryne Stanek came in next and had a 1-2-3 bottom of the eighth.
RHP Edwin Diaz came on in the bottom of the ninth and nearly gave up a game-tying homer to 2B Jung Hoo Lee who doubled off the right centerfield wall.
Diaz came back to strike out pinch-hitter Mike Yastrzemski and then 1B Pete Alonso made a game-saving leaping catch to rob catcher Patrick Bailey of a game-tying double down the right line to tie the game and give Diaz his 22th save of the season.
The Mets next game is tomorrow night, Sunday, July 27 at the Giants at 7:10 p.m. on ESPN Sunday Night baseball.
