The New York Mets beat the Miami Marlins 6-5 in 11 innings this afternoon at loanDepot Park to take two out of three games in the series and improved their record to 3-3.
The Met offense got off to a fast start in the top of the first after RF Juan Soto singled with one out and then 1B Pete Alonso followed with a RBI double.
The offense did not do much for the next six innings, but then came alive in the top of the eighth.
Pinch hitter Luis Torrens singled with one out and then SS Francisco Lindor followed with a single.
Two batters later, Alonso came through once again with a game-tying three run homer.
In the top of the 11th, Alonso led off with a walk and then LF Brandon Nimmo singled to advance Alonso to third and Soto to third as the ghost runner to load the bases.
DH Jesse Winker then drove in the go-ahead run with a based loaded walk and 3B Mark Vientos followed by driving in a much needed insurance run on a grounder into a fielder's choice.
RHP Clay Holmes started out well with two scoreless innings, but then ran into trouble in the bottom of the third after 1B Matt Mervis drove in a run with a sacrifice fly and then gave up another run after 2B Otto Lopez drove in a run on a fielder's choice.
Holmes was able to recover with a scoreless bottom of the fourth and then picked up the first two outs in the bottom of the fifth and taken out.
His final line was 4.2 innings, six hits, two runs (one earned run), two walks and six strikeouts.
RHP Reed Garrett followed with 1.1 scoreless innings.
LHP A.J. Minter came in next and gave up a RBI single to Lopez and was taken out.
RHP Ryan Stanek had to come in and gave up a RBI single to catcher Nick Fortes.
RHP Edwin Diaz came on in the bottom of the eighth and kept the game tied with a scoreless inning.
RHP Jose Butto followed with two scoreless innings in the bottom of the ninth and tenth to pick up his first win of the season.
LHP Danny Young came on in the bottom of the 11th and picked up only out and gave up a RBI single to SS Xavier Edwards and was taken out with runners on first and third with one out.
RHP Huascar Brazoban came on and retired 1B Jonah Bride on a fly out and then struck out Lopez to close it out and pick up his first save.
The Mets are off tomorrow and return back to action on Friday, April 4 in the home opener at Citi Field against the Toronto Blue Jays at 3:10 p.m.
