The New York Mets beat the Philadelphia Phillies 4-2 this afternoon at Citi Field to sweep their three-game series and improved their record to 30-27.

The Met offense was held scoreless for the first two innings until the bottom of the third after CF Brandon Nimmo and SS Francisco Lindor walked with two outs against former Met RHP Tajuan Walker and then 2B Jeff McNeil came through with a RBI single.

In the bottom of the fourth, RF Starling Marte was hit by a pitch and then later stole second.

Two batters later, LF Mark Canha came through once again with a two-run homer for his second homer in the last two games.

In the bottom of the sixth, 3B Brett Baty led off with a double and then Marte followed with a sacrifice bunt to advance Baty to third.

Mark Vientos came up next to pinch-hit for Daniel Vogelbach and hit a sacrifice fly to score Baty and bring in a much needed insurance run.

RHP Max Scherzer got off to a tough start in the top of the first after he gave up a single to SS Trea Turner and then walked DH Bryce Harper.

Catcher Francisco Alvarez then made a throwing error on a double steal which allowed Turner to score.

RF Nick Castellanos then followed with a sacrifice fly.

Scherzer settled down after that and did not allow any more runs the rest of the game.

His final line was seven innings, five hits, two runs, one earned run, one walk and nine strikeouts.

Scherzer had sharp command of his breaking ball and a lot of life on his fastball.

He picked up his fifth win and lowered his ERA to 3.21 and also had a 1.08 ERA in his last four starts.

RHP Jeff Brigham followed with a scoreless top of the eighth.

LHP Brooks Raley came on in the top of the ninth and gave up a lead-off single to Castelllanos, but came back to strike out Harper and LF Kyle Schwarber and was then taken out.

RHP Drew Smith came in next and retired pinch-hitter Drew Ellis on a fly out to centerfield to end the game and picked up his second save.

The Mets next game is tomorrow night, Friday, June 2 at home against the Toronto Blue Jays at 7:10 p.m.
