Alonso followed with a sacrifice fly to score Guillorme for his second RBI of the game and 76th overall.

RHP Taijuan Walker started out well with three scoreless innings, but ran into trouble in the bottom of the fourth after he gave up a one-out infield single to RF Seiya Suzuki and then two batters later a RBI single to 1B Frank Schwindel.

Walker settled down after that with scoreless inning in the bottom of the fifth and sixth and was taken out after the inning.

His final line was six innings, four hits, one run, two walks and five strikeouts.

Mets LHP David Peterson (Neville E. Guard-USA Today Sports)

The New York Mets lost to the Atlanta Braves 4-1 tonight at Truist Park in Atlanta, GA and dropped their record to 54-34.

LHP David Peterson cruised through the first five innings, but ran into trouble in the bottom of the sixth after he walked SS Dansby Swason with one out and then gave up a two-run homer to 1B Matt Olson and was taken out after that.

His final line was 5 1/3 innings, two hits, two runs, three walks and nine strikeouts.

Peterson did well and gave his team a chance to win. He had a sharp slider and great life on fastball and it is a shame he did not any run support. He deserved a chance to win the game.

RHP Seth Lugo came in next and struck out the next two hitters he faced to end the inning.

Lugo stayed in for the bottom of the seventh and gave up a lead-off single to catcher Travis d'Arnaud and a two-run hitter to the following hitter LF Adam Duvall and was taken out later in the inning.

RHP Colin Holderman followed and threw 1.1 scoreless innings.

The offense did not much for the first four innings against star rookie RHP Spencer Strider, but in the top of the fifth CF Brandon Nimmo walked with one out and then advanced to second on a wild pitch.

Two batters later, SS Francisco Lindor drove in Nimmo with an RBI triple.

The bats did not much after that and had five hits all night. They were 1-5 with runners in scoring position and left eight runners on base.

The offense is struggling without RF Starling Marte, 2B Jeff McNeil and catcher James McCann.  They need to get their starters back healthy and also bats at the trading deadline in order to jumpstart this offense.

Mets RHP Max Scherzer (Photo Credits to Bill Streicher-USA Today Sports)

The New York Mets beat the Atlanta Braves 4-1 tonight at Truist Park in Atlanta to take the first game of a key three-game series and improved their record to 54-33.

The offense was held scoreless for the first two innings against LHP Max Fried, but broke through in the top of the third after CF Brandon Nimmo led off with a double and two batters later, 1B Pete Alonso drove in Nimmo with a RBI double.

LF Mark Canha followed with a walk and 3B Eduardo Escobar singled to load the bases.

2B Luis Guillorme came up next grounded into a force out at second to score Alonso for the second run of the innning.

The bats did not do much for the next four innings, but in the top of the eighth Guillorme came through once again with a lead-off homer to bring in a much needed insurance run for his second RBI of the game.

In the top of the ninth, Nimmo led off with a walk and SS Francisco Lindor followed with a single on a well executed hit and run.

Alonso then grounded out into a fielder's choice which scored Nimmo for his second RBI of the game.

RHP Max Scherzer came out firing in the bottom of the first with a 1-2-3 inning and two strikeouts and also had a 1-2-3 bottom of the second.

Scherzer gave up his first hit a two-out single to 2B Robinson Cano in the bottom of the third, but came back to strike out RF Ronald Acuna Jr to end the inning.

Scherzer continued to roll with a 1-2-3 bottom of the fourth with two strikeouts and then also had 1-2-3 innings in the bottom of the fifth and sixth.

He ran into his first sign of trouble in the bottom of the seventh after he gave up a solo homer to 3B Austin Riley and then a double to DH Marcell Ozuna, but was able to recover after he struck out RF Eddie Rosario to end the inning and was then taken out.

His final line was seven innings, three hits, one run, 0 walks and nine strikeouts.

Scherzer was in complete command once again and showed off his repertoire of fastball, change-up, slider and cutter.

His slider and cutter were particular effective especially against the left handed hitters.

He is a lot of fun to watch and shows how to dominate without throwing with maximum effort.

He picked up his sixth win and lowered his ERA to 2.15.

RHP Adam Ottavino followed with a scoreless bottom of the eighth.

RHP Edwin Diaz came on in the bottom of the ninth and closed it out in dominating fashion striking out the side with an electric fastball and sharp slider.

In the bottom of the seventh, 3B Eduardo Escobar and 2B Luis Guillorme singled with two outs, but Nido grounded out to second to end the inning.

Now that's healthy he brings a winning presence to the top of the rotation and showed tonight why he is one of the best pitchers in baseball. It's a shame he was not able to get any run support since he deserved to get a win for his performance.

LHP Joely Rodriguez followed with a scoreless bottom of the seventh.

RHP Tommy Hunter then threw a scoreless bottom of the eighth.

RHP Seth Lugo came on in the bottom of the ninth and got into immediate trouble after he gave up a lead-off double to LF Tommy Pham and then intentionally walked RF Tyler Naquin.
