Mets vs. Reds Game 153 Recap

The New York Mets defeated the Cincinnati Reds 8-1 tonight for their third consecutive win and improved their record to 80-73. The offense was held scoreless for the first five innings until the top of the sixth after 3B Jeff McNeil hit a solo homer. In the top of the seventh inning, LF J.D Davis and SS Amed Rosario followed with a two-run homer. In the top of the eighth inning, RF Michael Conforto single and 1B Pete Alonso followed with a two-run homer for his 50th homer on the season. Alonso is the first Met and second rookie after Aaron Judge with 52 homers in 2017 to hit 50 homers in a season. In the top of the ninth with two outs, CF Brandon Nimmo singled, and McNeil drove him in with a double. Alonso was then walked intentionally and CF Juan Lagares then came through with an RBI single. Conforto followed with an RBI single of his own.

RHP Jacob deGrom had another dominating start with seven scoreless innings allowing four hits and no walks with nine strikeouts. deGrom picked up his 10th win on the year and lowered his ERA to 2.51, second in the National League behind Dodgers LHP Hyun-Jin Ryu. RHP Brad Brach followed and retired the first two hitters he faced and then a single to LF Josh Vanmeter and was then taken out. LHP Luis Avilan followed and walked 1B Joey Votto and was then taken out. RHP Edwin Diaz had to come in and struck out Reds slugger 3B Eugenio Suarez to end the inning. RHP Jeurys Familia gave up a run in the bottom of the ninth on a solo homer by RF Aristides Aquino, but was able to get the last three outs to close it out.

The Mets next game is tomorrow afternoon at the Reds at 4:10 p.m.
