Mets vs. Royals Game 1 Recap

Last night, the New York Mets lost to the Kansas City Royals 4-3 in the first game of the season. Matt Harvey didn't have his best stuff and gave up 4 runs. However, only 3 were earned. He had sharp secondary pitches, but he had trouble commanding his fastball. The Mets offense was lifeless until the 8th inning when their bats finally started to wake up. 1b  Lucas Duda hit a 2 run single and 2b Neil Walker grounded into a fielder's choice which brought home a run. SS Asdrubal Cabrera stuck out with 2 men on and 2 out in the 8th to end the inning. In the 9th inning, the Mets had another rally with a walk by catcher Travis d'Arnaud and a single by RF Curtis Granderson. They were unable to tie the game as 3b David Wright and LF Yoenis Cespedes both struck out to end the game. The Mets hope to bounce back tomorrow and split their series against the Royals. The game time is 4:15 with a pitching matchup of Noah Syndergarrd against former met starter Chris Young.

Matt Harvey to make Opening Day start

The Mets announced today that RHP Matt Harvey will make his start on Opening Day against the Royals on Sunday night. He was able to successfully pass a blood clot from his bladder. Harvey's doctors told him that the blood clot was caused due to him holding in his urine for too long of a time. Harvey will no longer make any starts in spring training, but will throw in 2 innings during a side session on Wednesday.

Mets Resign Yoenis Cespedes

The Mets announced last night that they have resigned outfielder Yoenis Cespedes for 3 years and $75 million. He can opt out after one year where he can make $27.5 million. His contract includes a full no-trade clause. He hit .291 last night with 35 homers and an OPS of .870. He hit 17 homers for the Mets in 36 games. This was a huge move for the Mets since they couldn't let Cespedes go to the Washington Nationals. They needed to have his bat in the middle of the order. The signing of Cespedes makes the Mets the favorites to win the National League East and the NL pennant and WS Series. Sandy Alderson deserves a lot of credit for getting this deal done.

Mets Sign Antonio Bastardo

The Mets announced yesterday that they have signed LHP reliever Antonio Bastardo to a 2 year deal worth $12 mi. He posted an ERA of 2.98 last year in 57.1 innings between the Phillies and Pirates. He had 10.5 strikeouts per 9 innings and a walk rate of 4.08 per 9 innings. In his career, he has a lifetime ERA of 3.58 in 316.1 innings pitched. For his career, he has had an incredible 11.04 strikeouts over 9 innings and a 4.30 walk rate. He has held lefties in his career to a batting average of only .176. Bastardo will really help bolster the Mets pen and give them another solid lefty along with Jerry Blevins. Hopefully he can be the lefty specialist that the Mets have lacked in recent years.
