After a scoreless top of the first, LF Brandon Nimmo walked to lead off the top of the second and DH Jesse Winker and 3B Mark Vientos followed with singles to load the bases.
CF Jeff McNeil and catcher Francisco Alvarez then both grounded into fielder's choices to bring home two runs.
After scoreless innings in the top of the third and fourth, RF Juan Soto doubled with one out in the top of the fifth and then 1B Pete Alonso followed with a go-ahead two-run homer.
Nimmo and Winker followed with singles and then Vientos grounded out, but 1B Wilson Contreras dropped a routine double play grounder which allowed Nimmo to score.
McNeil followed with a single and Alvarez followed with a RBI single to score Vientos.
In the top of the seventh, Nimmo led off with a homer.
Three batters later, CF Tyrone Taylor doubled and Alvarez followed with another RBI single.
In the top of the ninth, Taylor was hit by a pitch with one out, Alvarez followed with a single and then 2B Luisangel Acuna drove in Taylor with a sacrifice fly.
RHP Clay Holmes got off to a tough start in the bottom of the first after he gave up a lead-off double to RF Lars Nootbarr who then stole third and scored on an infield hit by SS Masyn Winn.
Holmes had a scoreless bottom of the second and then in the bottom of the third, gave up a leadoff single to CF Victor Scott II who then advanced to second on a ground-out, stole third and scored on a throwing error by Alvarez.
Later in the inning, Holmes gave up a RBI single to 1B Wilson Contreras.
Holmes was able to settle down after that with consecutive 1-2-3 innings in the bottom of the fourth and fifth and retired eight straight hitters going into the sixth.
His final line was six innings, three runs, 0 walks and three strikeouts.
He picked up his fourth win.
RHP Jose Butto followed with two scoreless innings in the bottom of the seventh and eighth.
RHP Ryne Stanek closed it out with a scoreless bottom of the ninth,
The Mets next game is tomorrow afternoon, Saturday, May 3 at the Cardinals at 2:15 p.m.
