Mets vs. Reds Game 29 Recap

Mets LHP Jason Vargas (Credits to MetsMerizedOnline.com)


The New York Mets defeated the Cincinnati Reds 4-3 tonight in 10 innings and improved their record to 15-14. LHP Jason Vargas had one of his better starts allowing one run on three hits with three walks and five strikeouts in 5.1 innings. RHP Robert Gsellman came in next and got the last two outs in the top of the sixth and then threw a scoreless top of the seventh inning. RHP Jeurys Familia followed and threw a scoreless top of the eighth inning after being aided by a double play, but ran intro trouble in the top of the ninth inning. Familia gave a walk and three singles before he was taken out. RHP Drew Gagnon had to come in to struck out 3B Eduardo Suarez with the bases loaded. Gagnon stayed in for the top of the tenth and threw a scoreless inning and picked up his first win.

In the bottom of the third inning, SS Amed Rosario led off with a single, CF Juan Lagares reached 1B on a fielder's choice and starting pitcher LHP Jason Vargas bunted Rosario and Lagares over. 2B Jeff McNeil drove in the first run after he reached on a drag bunt. The bats went quiet after that until the bottom of the seventh when 3B Todd Frazier hit a solo homer. In the bottom of the eighth inning, McNeil lead off with a double, and then 1B Pete Alonso and LF Brandon Nimmo struck out. RF Michael Conforto drove in McNeil with a RBI single. In the bottom of tenth inning, pinch-hitter 3B J.D. Davis led off with a double then McNeil singled for his fourth hit of the game. 1B Pete Alonso hit a sacrifice fly to right field for the first walk-off RBI of his career.

The Mets next game is tomorrow night against the Reds at 7:10 p.m.

Mets vs. Reds Game 28 Recap

The New York Mets lost to the Cincinnati Reds 5-4 tonight and dropped their record to 14-14. RHP Zack Wheeler had a scoreless top of the first inning, but ran into trouble in the top of the second and giving up back-to-back walks and then an RBI double to SS Jose Inglesias. He gave up a RBI single to catcher Tucker Barnhardt and another RBI single to CF Jose Peraza and then a sacrifice fly to 3B Eugenio Suarez. After that Wheeler settled down with scoreless innings in the top of the third, fourth, fifth and sixth. His final line was four runs on seven hits with four strikeouts and three walks in six innings. RHP Seth Lugo came in next and threw a scoreless top of the seventh inning. RHP Jeurys Familia threw a scoreless top of the eighth inning. RHP Edwin Diaz gave up a solo homer to LF Jesse Winker in the top of the ninth inning.

In the bottom of the second inning, RF Michael Conforto and catcher Wilson Ramos doubled to bring home the first run of the game. SS Amed Rosario drove in Ramos with an RBI single. In the bottom of the fourth inning, 1B Pete Alonso and LF Brandon Nimmo both drew based loaded walks to tie the game. After that, the offense went quiet the rest of the way and left 13 men on base.

Mets vs. Brewers Game 27 Recap

The New York Mets defeated the Milwaukee Brewers 5-2 this afternoon to salvage the last game of the series and improved their record to 14-13. LHP Steven Matz cruised through the first six innings, but ran intro trouble in the top of the seventh. Matz gave up an bloop single to RF Ben Gamel and got LF Ryan Braun to fly out and struck out 1B Jesus Aguilar, bur gave up a two-run homer to third baseman Mike Moustakis. His final line was 7 innings, 5 hits, 2 earned runs and 4 strikeouts. He picked up his third win. RHP Seth Lugo came in next and had a dominating top of the eighth inning striking out the side. RHP Edwin Diaz closed it out with a 1-2-3 top of the ninth inning and picked up his eighth save.

The offense got on the board early in the bottom of the first inning after 1B Pete Alonso tripled, CF Juan Lagares walked after 2B Robinson Cano was taken out after getting hit on the hand by a pitch and 3B Todd Frazier drove Alonso in with an RBI single. CF Brandon Nimmo led off the next inning with a single and SS Amed Rosario hit an RBI double. After that the bats went quiet until the bottom of the seventh after Rosario reached on a two-base error by Gamel, and then pinch-hitter Michael Conforto was walked intentionally. 3B J.D. Davis was then pinch-hit for Dominic Smith and hit an RBI single. In the bottom of the eighth, catcher Wilson Ramos singled with one out and Nimmo and Conforto walked to load the bases. Catcher Tomas Nido broke the game open with a two-run double.

The Mets next game is tomorrow night at home against the Reds at 7:10 p.m.

RHP Noah Syndergarrd had another difficult outing allowing five runs on 10 hits with 3 walks and five strikeouts in five innings. RHP Robert Gsellman came in next and gave up one run in two innings. RHP Jeurys Familia gave up a run in the top of the eighth inning. RHP Edwin Diaz threw a scoreless top of the ninth inning.

The offense was held scoreless for the first two innings, but broke through with a run in the bottom of the third inning after LF Jeff McNeil scored on a wild pitch. SS Amed Rosario hit a solo homer in the bottom of the seventh inning. 1B Pete Alonso hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the seventh inning. Rosario drove in another run with an RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning.

The New York Mets lost to the Mulwaukee Brewers 10-2 tonight after a two-hour, forty minute rain delay and dropped their record to 13-12. RHP Jacon deGrom got the start despite the long delay and had a difficult outing giving up five earned runs on five hits and three walks in four innings. RHP Corey Oswalt gave in next and gave up four runs in three innings. LHP Luis Avilan gave up a run in the top of the eighth inning. LHP Daniel Zamora threw a scoreless top of the ninth inning.



The offense struggled with runners in scoring position leaving nine runners on base. 3B Todd Frazier hit an RBI single in the in bottom of the fourth inning. 2B Robinson Cano hit a RBI single in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Mets vs. Phillies Game 24 Recap

The New York Mets lost to the Philadelphia Phillies 6-0 tonight to drop their record to 13-11, but took two out of three games in the series. LHP Jason Vargas got the start and looked better than in his previous outing. Vargas gave up a run in the top of the first after a couple of doubles and walk, but settled down after that. He retired 11 out of the last 15 batters he faced. His final line was one run on three hits with two walks and four strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings. RHP Seth Lugo had to come to get the last out in the top of the fifth and stayed in for the top of the sixth  and seventh and threw two scoreless innings. RHP Robert Gsellman came in the top of the eighth inning and gave up a lead-off triple to 1B Rhys Hoskins, an RBI single to 3B Maikel Franco and a single to 2B Cesar Hernandez and then SS Sean Rodriguez hit a sacrifice bunt. Gsellman gave up two more runs on back-to-back RBI singles, but was able to finish the inning. RHP Jacob Rhyme came in the top of the ninth inning again and gave up a two-run homer to Hoskins.

The offense was lifeless tonight against Phillies starter Vince Velasquez. They managed six hits and three hits. It was the second time they were shutout dating back to their home opener on April 4th against the Nationals.

The Mets are off tomorrow and return to action on Friday night against the Brewers at 7:10 p.m.

Mets vs. Phillies Game 23 Recap

The New York Mets defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 9-0 tonight for their second consecutive win and improved their record to 13-10. RHP Zack Wheeler had his best outing of the young season with a dominating performance. Wheeler worked out a single to catcher J.T. Realmunto and struck out RF Bryce Harper and 1B Rhys Hoskins. After that, he got in a groove and at point struck out seven hitters in a row. He was in total control all night with an electric fastball and a sharp curveball, change-up and slider. He had confidence in everything he threw and was efficient and kept his pitch count down. If Wheeler continues to pitch like this, he could form a tough 1-2 punch at the top of the rotation along with Jacon deGrom. It will for him to leave in the offseason as a free-agent with outings like tonight. Wheeler's final line was 7 innings, 5 hits, 0 walks and 11 strikeouts. He picked up his second win and lowered his ERA to 4.85. LHP Luis Avilan came in next and threw a scoreless top of the eighth inning with a couple of strikeouts. RHP Jacob Rhyme closed it out with a scoreless top of the ninth inning.

In the bottom of the second inning, catcher Wilson Ramos walked to lead off the inning and SS Lios Guillorme singled with two outs. Zack Wheeler helped out his own cause with a two-run double. RF Brandon Nimmo hit a grounder through 2B Cesar Hernandez's legs to drive home the third run. In the bottom of the fourth, Wheeler capped out his amazing night with a solo homer. He became the first pitcher to hit a ball 100 mph and throw a pitch at 100 mph. In the bottom of the fifth, the offense broke it open after 2B Robinson Cano and RF Michael Conforto singled. Catcher Wilson Ramos hit a come-backer back to the ground to advance Cano and Conforto to second and third. LF Jeff McNeil was walked intentionally to load the bases. 3B Todd Frazier capped out the inning with a grand slam, his first homer of the season.  In the bottom of the sixth, CF Juan Lagares walked and both Cano and Conforto singled with two outs. Ramos followed with an RBI single.

The Mets next game is tomorrow night against the Phillies at 7:10 P.M. as they go for the sweep.

The New York Mets defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 5-1 tonight and improved their record to 12-10 on the season. After having to wait out a 1 hour, 35 min rain delay LHP Steven Matz had a much improved outing after he was unable to get out of the first inning in his last start against the Phillies. Matz started out well with three scoreless innings, bur ran into trouble in the top of the fourth, after he gave up a solo homer to 1B Rhys Hoskins, but was able to limit the damage to one run. He settled down after that with scoreless innings in the top of the fifth and sixth innings and retired the last seven Phillies he faced. Matz was effective due to working both sides of the plate and having sharp command of his fastball.  His final line was one run on three hits with six strikeouts and two walks in six innings. He picked up his second win. RHP Seth Lugo came in next in the top of the seventh and threw a 1-2-3 inning. RHP Jeurys Familia looked better in the top of the eighth than in his previous appearances and had a 1-2-3 inning. RHP Edwin Diaz closed it out in the top of the ninth inning in a non-save situation with two strike-outs and a ground-out.

The offense wasn't able to score in the first two innings, but broke through in the bottom of the third inning after LF Brandon Nimmo walked and 1B Pete Alonso drove him in with an RBI double. Catcher Wilson Ramos later drove in the run in the inning with an RBI single. 2B Jeff McNeil hit a solo homer in the bottom of the fifth inning. In the bottom of the seventh inning, CF Juan Lagares singled to lead off the inning. Later Alonso was hit by a pitch with based loaded to bring home a run. RF Michael Conforto drove in a run a few batter later with a sacrifice fly.

Mets vs. Cardinals Game 21 Recap

The New York Mets lost to the St. Louis Cardinals 6-3 this afternoon to lose two out of three games in the series and dropped their record to 11-10. RHP Noah Syndergarrd started out well with three strikeouts in the bottom of the first inning, but ran into trouble in the bottom of the second inning. Syndergarrd walked RF Jose Martinez and then gave up a single to catcher Yadier Moliana. He struck out CF Dexter Fowler, but gave up an RBI single to 2B Kolten Wong. Cardinals pitcher RHP Dakota Hudson hit a routine grounder to SS Amed Rosario, but Rosario made an error and allowed Hudson to reach base. 3B Matt Carpentar hit a shallow fly ball to hold the runner at third base, but 1B Paul Goldschidmt hit a two-run single. It got worse for Syndergarrd in the bottom of the third inning after he gave up a walk, bloop single, RBI ground-out and a double by Fowler led to two more runs. In the bottom of the fourth, he gave up an infield hit to Goldschmidt and a double by LF Marcel Ozuna led to another run in the bottom of the fourth. In the bottom of the fifth, he had an eight-pitch 1-2-3 inning and was then taken out. His final line was 5 innings, 6 runs (4 earned), 8 hits, 2 walks and 5 strikeouts. RHP Robert Gsellman came in next and has his best performance of the season with thee scoreless innings in the bottom of the sixth, seventh and eighth innings. Gsellman has looked a lot better in his last couple of outings and lowered his ERA from 3.27 to 2.57.  It would be ideal if he could establish himself as the set-up man in the eighth inning to closer Edwin Diaz.

1B Pete Alonso continued his torrid start with a 444 ft solo homer to dead center field in the top of the first inning. The bats were quiet for the next two innings until the top of the fourth inning after RHP Noah Syndergarrd helped out his own cause with a solo homer. 2B Robinson Cano hit a solo homer in the top of the fifth inning. RF Michael Conforto added a solo homer in the top of the seventh inning.

The Mets next game is tomorrow night back home against the Philadelphia Phillies at 7:10 P.M.

Mets vs. Cardinals Game 20 Recap

The New York Mets lost to the St. Louis Cardinals 10-2 this afternoon and dropped their record to 11-9. RHP Chris Flexen was brought up from Triple-A Syracuse to make the start in place of RHP Jacob deGrom who has a sore elbow. Flexen had a scoreless bottom of the first inning, but had a difficult bottom of the second inning after giving up an unearned run due to a passed ball by catcher Wilson Ramos and a two-run single to Cardinals starter Miles Mikolas. It only got worse for Flexen  in the bottom of the third inning after he gave up a RBI single to RF Jose Martinez and a sacrifice fly to catcher Yadier Moliana. Flexen gave up an RBI single to Moliana in the bottom of the sixth and was then taken out. His final line was 4.1 innings, 7 hits, 6 runs (5 earned), 4 walks and 0 strikeouts. LHP Luis Avilan came in next and was able to finish the bottom of the fifth, but gave up an RBI double to SS Paul DeJong in the bottom of the sixth. Avilan was taken out in the middle of the sixth for RHP Jacob Rhyme. Rhyme finished out the bottom of the sixth,  but gave up a two-run double to Martinez in the bottom of the seventh. RHP Paul Sewald gave up a solo homer to 1B Paul Goldschmidt in the bottom of the eighth inning.

The bats were shut down against Cardinals RHP Mike Mikolas and were held scoreless for the first six scoreless innings. In the top of the seventh, LF Jeff McNeil singled and SS Amed Rosario drove him with a RBI triple. 3B J.D. Davis followed with a RBI ground-out to score Rosario.

The Mets next game is tomorrow afternoon at 2:15 p.m. against the Cardinals in the final game of the series.

The New York Mets defeated the St. Louis Cardinals 5-4 last night and improved their record to 11-8 on the season. In the top of the first inning, the offense got on the board early against Cardinals starter RHP Adam Wainright. 2B Robinson Cano doubled, RF Michael Conforto walked, and catcher Wilson Ramos hit an RBI single to drive in the first run of the game. Third baseman J.D. Davis followed with an RBI double to bring home the second run of the inning. In the top of the third inning, Cano drove in CF Juan Lagares with an RBI double. Ranos drove in second run of the game with an RBI ground-out in the top of the fourth inning. 1B Pete Alonso hit a solo homer, his seventh of the year in the top of the sixth inning.

LHP Jason Vargas gave up one run on three hits with three walks and three strikeouts in four innings. Vargas had a no-decision, since he couldn't go past four. RHP Seth Lugo came in next and gave up a two-run homer to rookie pinch-hitter Lane Thomas in the bottom of the fifth. Lugo settled down with a scoreless bottom of the sixth. He picked up his first win. RHP Jeurys Familia settled down with a scoreless bottom of the seventh inning, and then came back out for the bottom of the eighth inning, but was taken out after recording one out. LHP Justin Wilson came on to retire CF Dexter Fowler on a hard-hit grounder to third baseman J.D. Davis, but then walked lefty 2B Kolten Wong on four pitches. RHP Robert Gsellman had to come on to get out of the jam and retired pinch-hitter Jed Gyorko on a pop-up to Cano and 3B Matt Carpentar hit a ground-out to 1B Pete Alonso to end the inning. RHP Edwin Diaz came on to close it out in the bottom of the ninth and had a shaky outing and walked LF Marcel Ozuna, gave up a base hit to RF Jose Martinez, but got catcher Yadier Moliana to fly out with center field with the bases loaded with two outs to pick up his seventh save.

The New York Mets lost to the Philadelphia Phillies 3-2 today to lose two out of three games in the series and dropped their record to 10-8. RHP Zack Wheeler started out well with a 1-2-3 bottom of the first inning, but gave up a run in the bottom of the second inning after loading the bases due to  as single by catcher J.T. Realmunto, a base hit by CF Odubel Herrera and a walk to 2B Cesar Hernandez. He gave up a run on a sacrifice fly to 3B Makiel Franco. Wheeler settled down after that with scoreless innings in the bottom of the third and fourth innings, but gave up a solo homer to SS Scott Kingery in the bottom of the fifth. He gave up another solo homer to Cesar Hernandez in the bottom of the sixth inning and had a scoreless bottom of the seventh inning. His final line was 7 innings, three runs, five hits, three walks and five strikeouts. LHP Justin Wilson came in next and threw a scoreless bottom of the eighth inning.

The bats were shut down against Phillies starter RHP Jake Arreieta for the first six innings, but broke though in the top of the seventh inning. RF Michael Conforto hit a solo homer in the top of the seventh inning. In the top of the ninth inning, 1B Pete Alonso led off with a walk and 2B Robinson Cano was hit by a pitch. Conforto flew out and then 3B J.D. Davis struck out. SS Amed Rosario hit an infield single to bring home Alonso. Catcher Wilson Ramos who pinch hit for catcher Travis d'Arnaud was hit by a pitch to load the bases. CF Keon Broxton came to the plate with two outs and had a chance to win the game, but struck out with the bases loaded against Phillies closer Hector Neris to end the game.

The Mets are off tomorrow and return to action on Friday, April 19th at the St. Louis Cardinals at 8:15 P.M.

Mets vs. Phillies Game 17 Recap

The New York Mets lost to the Philadelphia Phillies 14-3 tonight and dropped their record to 10-7. LHP Steven Matz had a brutal performance and was unable to record an out in the first inning. Matz allowed LF Andrew Mccutchen to reach base after an error by SS Amed Rosario and then gave up a double to SS Jean Segura. He then hit RF Bryce Harper to load the bases. Matz gave up a two-run homer to catcher J.T. Realmunto and a three-run homer to 3B Scott Kingery. It only got worse for him from there after 2B Cesar Hernandez walked, CF Aaron Altheer reached on another error by Rosario and 3B Makiel Franco broke the game open with a three-run homer, which was Matz's final batter. His final line was 0+ innings pitched, 4 hits, 8 runs (6 earned), one walk and one strikeout. RHP Drew Gagnon came in next and after getting one out, allowed a double to Mccutchen, walked Harper and gave up a two-run double to Realmunto. Gagnon settled down after that with 1-2-3 innings in the bottom of the second and third innings. He gave up a homer to Realmunto in the bottom of the fourth inning, but had another 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the fifth. In the bottom of the sixth, Gagnon gave up a single to Harper and was hurt by an error by J.D. Davis. He gave up an RBI double to Scott Kingery and then was taken out. His final line was 5.1 innings, 7 hits, 6 runs (5 earned), one walk and five strikeouts. RHP Paul Sewald came in next and threw 2.2 scoreless innings.

Catcher Wilson Ramos drove in the first run of the game with a solo homer in the top of the second inning. RF Michael Conforto also hit a solo homer in the top of the second inning. Ramos drove in another run in the top of the fifth with a sacrifice fly.

The New York Mets defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 7-6 in 11 innings last night and improved their record to 10-6. The offense was shut down for the first two innings against Phillies starter RHP Aaron Nola, but broke through in the top of the third inning. 1B Pete Alonso walked and RF Michael Conforto singled with two outs. Catcher Wilson Ramos brought them both in with a two-run single. 3B Jeff McNeil followed with a RBI single. 2B Robinson Cano hit a two-run double in the top of the fourth. CF Brandon Nimmo hit a solo homer in the top of the sixth. The bats went quiet until the top of the eleventh after pinch-hitter Juan Lagares reached on an infield hit, Nimmo walked and Conforto drove in the winning run after his line drive bounced off Phillies 1B Rhys Hoskins for an unearned run.

RHP Noah Syndergarrd had another difficult outing allowing five runs on nine hits in five innings. Syndergarrd also had nine strikeouts, but three walks, which caused his pitch count to reach 101 pitches after five and caused his early exit. RHP Seth Lugo came in next with two dominating hitles scoreless innings in the bottom of the sixth and seventh innings with two strikeouts. RHP Jeurys Familai followed in the bottom of the eighth and had troubles with his command and walked three batters before being pulled for RHP Robert Gsellman. Gsellman walked in the tying run, but was able to keep the game tied. LHP Luis Avilan threw a scoreless bottom of the tenth inning and picked up his first win. RHP Edwin Diaz closed it out in the bottom of the eleventh inning in dominating fashion striking out the side and picked up his sixth save of the season.

Mets vs. Braves Game 15 Recap

The New York Mets lost to the Atlanta Braves 6-3 tonight for their second consecutive loss and dropped their record to 9-6. RHP Jacob deGrom had his another rough outing after he struggled on Tuesday against the Minnesota Twins. deGrom had a scoreless bottom of the first inning, but gave up a solo homer to RF Nick Markakis in the bottom of the second inning. In the bottom of the third inning, he gave up another run on an RBI single by LF Ronald Acuna Jr. He had a scoreless bottom of the fourth inning, but gave up a solo homer to 3B Josh Donaldson in the bottom of the fifth inning and was taken out after throwing 115 pitches. His final line was three runs on five hits with four walks and nine strikeouts. deGrom's velocity was there, but he was missing with his command. It's alarming, but hopefully he can improve in his next start. LHP Justin Wilson came in next in the bottom of the sixth inning and gave up a two-run homer to pinch-hitter Charlie Culverson. RHP Jeurys Familia gave up a RBI triple to Donaldson after previously allowing a triple to lead-off hitter to 2B Ozzie Albies.

3B J.D. Davis drove in the first run of the game with a solo homer in the top of the second inning. The bats went quiet until the top of the eighth inning after catcher Wilson and LF Jeff McNeil singled and SS Amed Rosario drove in a run on an infield single. CF Keon Broxton later drove in McNeil with an RBI single. LF Brandon Nimmo struck out with two runners on to end the threat in the eighth.

The Mets next game is tomorrow night at 7:00 in Philadelphia against the Phillies.

The New York Mets lost to the Atlanta Braves 11-7 tonight and dropped their record to 9-5. LHP Jason Vargas had another rough outing allowing four runs on three hits and two walks in 1/3 of an inning. Vargas now has a 14.21 ERA. It's time to move him out of the rotation. They can't afford to have him ruin any chance of victory when he takes the mound. RHP Corey Oswalt followed and gave up five runs on six hits with four walks and two strikeouts in 3 2/3 innings. Oswalt now has a 12.27 ERA. LHP Luis Avilan came in next and gave up a run in two innings on a RBI single to SS Dwansby Swanson. RHP Robert Gsellman also gave up a run in two innings on a solo homer by 3B Josh Donaldson.

The offense was resilient and scored four runs in the top of the second inning. CF Juan Lagares hit a two-run double. Reliever Corey Oswalt hit a sacrifice fly. 3B Jeff McNeil tied the game with a RBI single. McNeil set a franchise record with his 90th hit in his first 76 games that has been previously held by Jose Reyes.

The New York Mets defeated the Atlanta Braves 6-2 tonight for their second consecutive win and improved their record to 9-4. LF Brandon Nimmo broke out of slump after he hit a two-run homer to drive in the first two runs of the game. Manager Mickey Callaway moved Nimmo down to eighth in the order and he responded with three hits. 3B Jeff McNeil hit a two-run triple in the top of the fourth. 2B Robinson Cano followed with an RBI double. RF Michael Conforto kept the inning going with an RBI double. 1B Dominic Smith filled in for Pete Alonso after a day off and hit a single and double. The Mets tied a franchise record with six runs in six straight games.

RHP Zack Wheeler bounced back after his last two rough outings against the Washington Nationals with six strong innings. Wheeler gave up two runs on six hits with eight strikeouts and three walks. He picked up first win. LHP Justin Wilson followed with a scoreless bottom of the seventh inning and lowered his ERA to 1.35. RHP Seth Lugo closed it out with the last six outs in the bottom of the eighth and ninth innings. Lugo gave up one hit and no walks with two strikeouts.

Mets vs. Braves Game 12 Recap

The New York Mets defeated the Atlanta Braves 6-3 tonight for their second consecutive win and improved their record to 8-4 on the season. The offense broke out in the top of the second inning after RF Michael Conforto and Catcher Wilson Ramos walked and SS Amed Rosario hit a three-run homer, his first of the season to dead center field. The bats went quiet after that until the top of the sixth inning after Ramos and 3B Jeff McNeil singled. Rosario drove in his fourth run on the night with an RBI single. In the top of the seventh, LF Brandon Nimmo led off with a walk and 1B Pete Alonso continued his torrid start with a two-run homer to center field that went 454 feet and an exit velocity of 118 miles hour. He now had 6 homers and 17 RBI's which is second in the National League and his .909 slugging percentage is second in the Majors behind Mike Trout.

LHP Steven Matz gave up a run in the bottom of the first inning on a RBI double by LF Jorge Camargo but settled down after that. Matz retired 13 hitters in a row and got into a groove. He was mixing in his change-up well and throwing it effectively to both sides of plate. His final line was 6 innings, 4 hits, 2 runs, 1 walk and 8 strikeouts. He lowered his ERA to 1.65. He picked up his first win since July 26th. RHP Robert Gsellman came in next and loaded the bases, but was able to escape out of trouble after he struck out 2B Ozzie Albies and got 3B Josh Donaldson in a force out to end the inning. LHP Luis Avilan followed in the bottom of the eighth and gave up a solo homer to 2B Ozzie Albies and was taken out. RHP Jeurys Familia had to come in to get the last two outs of the inning on strikeouts. RHP Edwin Diaz came on in the bottom of the ninth inning to close out and gave up a lead-off single to catcher Tyler Flowers and a double to Donaldson, but struck out 1B Freddie Freeman to end the game and picked up his fifth save.

Mets vs. Twins Game 11 Recap

The New York Mets defeated the Minnesota Twins 9-6 tonight and improved their record to 7-4 on the season. The bats were held hitless for the first four innings, but finally woke up in the bottom of the fifth inning and showed signs of life. LF Jeff McNeil broke up the no-hit bid with a single and SS Amed Rosario and 3B J.D Davis followed with walks to load the bases. RHP Noah Syndergarrd drove in McNeil after he walked with the bases loaded. The Twins then took out starting pitching RHP Jake Odorizzi for reliever LHP Andrew Vasquez. Vasquez hit RF Brandon Nimmo and walked 1B Pete Alonso to give the Mets a 2-1 lead. He then walked 2B Robinson Cano for the Twins fifth walk of the inning. Vasquez was pulled after that for reliever RHP Trevor Hildenberger. Hildenberger gave up another based loaded walk to RF Michael Conforto and a two-run single to catcher Wilson Ramos. :LHP Martin Perez came in next and after a scoreless bottom of the sixth inning, Nimmo led off the bottom of the seventh with a single, Alonso and Cano walked to load the bases. Conforto broke the game open with a two-run single. LF Jeff McNeil added an RBI single later in the inning.

RHP Noah Syndergarrd dominated through the first seven innings with seven strikeouts and no walks on two hits. Syndergarrd ran into trouble in the top of the eighth inning after he gave an infield hit to catcher Mitch Garver and after a passed ball, he allowed an RBI double to 2B Jonathan Schoop. Syndergarrd allowed a first-pitch RBI triple to CF Byron Buxton and was then taken out.  RHP Jeurys Familia came on in relief and allowed a RBI single to pinch-hitter Jake Cave and a double to RF Max Kepler. He then walked SS Jorge Polanco to load the bases and got out of the jam after 3B Williams Astudillo grounded into a double play. Syndergarrd's final line was : 7 innings, 5 hits, 4 earned runs, 0 walks and 7 strikeouts. Familia's final line was: 1 inning, 1 hit, 1 earned run, 1 walk, and 0 strikeouts. RHP Edwin Diaz came on in the top of the ninth inning in a non-save situation and struck out 1B C.J. Cron, and gave up a homer to Mitch Garver. He allowed a single to Schoop and a wild pitch, but settled down after that and struck out Buxton and pinch-hitter Elhire Adriaza for the last out.

The New York Mets lost to the Minnesota Twins 14-8 last night for their second consecutive loss and dropped their record to 6-4. RHP Jacob deGrom had a strong top of the first inning, but ran into trouble in the top of the second inning. He gave up a homer to catcher Mitch Garver to lead off the inning to snap his 27 inning scoreless streak and wound up throwing 31 pitches in the inning. In the top of the third inning, deGrom's struggles continued after he gave up a triple to SS Jorge Polanco and then allowed him to score on a wild pitch. He allowed a solo homer to SS Eddie Rosario and another homer to Mitch Garland later in the inning. In the top of the fourth inning, deGrom gave up a double to CF Byron Buxton and a RBI single to RF Max Kepler and was taken out after the inning. deGrom had a rare off night and struggled with command of his fastball and slider. It happens to everyone including one of the best pitchers in baseball. His final line was 4 innings, 8 hits, 6 runs, 1 walk and 3 strikeouts.  RHP Seth Lugo came in next and threw a scoreless top of the fifth inning, but allowed a solo homer to 2B Jonathan Schoop in the top of the sixth. LHP Luis Avilan followed and threw a scoreless top of the seventh inning. RHP Robert Gsellman gave up three unearned runs in the top of the eighth inning due to an error by 1B Pete Alonso on a ground-ball by Byron Buxton which allowed a run to score. He later gave up a two-run homer to Jorge Polanco. LHP Jason Vargas gave up four runs in the top of the ninth inning after he allowed a lead-off double to Schoop and a single to Mitch Garland. Vargas capped out the Mets struggles on the mound after he gave up a three-run homer to 2B Jonathan Schoop which put the game out of reach.

The offense came to play after RF Michael Conforto doubled in the bottom of the second inning, 3B J.D Davis walked and SS Amed Rosario drove in Conforto with an RBI single. In the bottom of the third inning, CF Brandon Nimmo homered and two batters later, Michael Conforto also hit a solo homer. In the bottom of the seventh inning, 1B Pete Alonso hit a solo homer. In the bottom of the ninth inning, Alonso hit another homer, this time a two-run shot. This gave up him a Met record of five homers in his first 10 games. LF Jeff McNeil drove in a run in the inning with a based loaded walk. Catcher Travis d'Arnaud grounded into a fielder's choice which brought home a run.

Mets vs. Nationals Game 9 Recap

The New York Mets lost to the Washington Nationals 12-9 today to lose two out of three games in the series and dropped their record to 6-3. RHP Zack Wheeler had a difficult outing and was hurt by a long second inning, where he gave up five runs. Wheeler settled down in the third inning and fourth innings, but gave up two runs in the top of the fifth innings. His final line was: 4 2/3 innings, 4 hits, 7 runs, 7 walks and 2 strikeouts. RHP Tim Peterson came in next and gave up an inherited run on a based loaded walk before getting out of the inning. Peterson stayed in for the top of the sixth inning and gave up three runs on a based loaded walk to 1B Ryan Zimmerman and a RBI single to catcher Kurt Suzuki. LHP Luis Avilan gave up a three-run homer to 2B Anthony Rendon. RHP Robert Gsellman threw a scoreless top of the eighth inning. RHP Seth Lugo threw a scoreless top of the ninth inning.

In the bottom of the second inning, RF Michael Conforto hit a double and advanced to third on an error by Nationals right fielder Adam Eaton. Catcher Wilson Ramos followed with an RBI single. The bats fell quiet until the bottom of the seventh after 2B Luis Guillorme and SS Amed Rosario singled. CF Keon Broxton struck out, by RF Brandon Nimmo came through after a slow start with a RBI double. LF Jeff McNeil followed with a RBI single. 1B Pete Alonso continued his torrid start with a three-run homer. In the bottom of the eighth inning, pinch hitter Dom Smith led off the inning with a walk and advanced to third on two wild pitches, but wasn't able to get any further after Rosario and Broxton struck out and Nimmo flew out to end the inning. In the bottom of the ninth inning, McNeil led off with a hit by pitch and Alonso walked. Catcher Travis d'Arnaud flew out, by then Conforto hit a three-run homer. Unfortunately they weren't able to get closer after pinch-hitter Juan Lagares struck out and Luis Guillorme flew out to end the game.

The Mets have an off day tomorrow and return to action on Tuesday night against the Twins at 7:10 P.M.

Mets vs. Nationals Game 8 Recap

The New York Mets defeated the Washington Nationals 6-5 this afternoon and improved their record to 6-2. LHP Steven Matz didn't have the best command and a high pitch count, which resulted him in only going five innings. Matz allowed no runs on two hits with four walks and eight strikeouts. He lowered his ERA to 0.87 on the season. RHP Robert Gsellman came in next and gave up a double to 3B Anthony Rendon, ground-out to RF Juan Soto and a game-tying RBI ground-out to Ryan Zimmerman. LHP Justin Wilson followed and got the first two outs in the top of the seventh, but then walked CF Victor Robles and gave up a bunt single to 2B Brian Dozier. Wilson was pulled for RHP Jeurys Familia. Familia gave up a run after catcher Wilson Ramos committed a passed ball and couldn't find the ball. Familia stayed in for the top of the eighth inning and gave up game-tying homer to Rendon and a two-run homer to SS Wilmer Difo. RHP. Edwin Diaz had 1-2-3 top of the ninth inning and picked up fourth save.

The offense was held scoreless for the first three innings. 3B J.D Davis drove in the first run with a solo homer in the bottom of the fourth inning. Davis hit another solo homer his second of the day in the bottom of the sixth inning. Two batters later, RF Michael Conforto hit a solo homer to increase the lead to 3-1. 1B Pete Alonso and 2B Robinson Cano hit back-to-back homers in the bottom of the eighth to tie the game at 5. Conforto followed by hitting a double, pinch-hitter Jeff McNeil was hit a by pitch and CF Keon Broxton hit a RBI single which would prove to the be the go-ahead run.

Mets vs. Nationals Game 7 Recap

The New York Mets lost to the Washington Nationals 4-0 this afternoon in their home opener and dropped their record to 5-2. RHP Noah Syndergarrd had a strong first inning with two strikeouts, but ran into trouble in the top of the second inning. Syndergarrd gave up back-to-back walks and a wild pitch  He then struck out catcher Yan Gomes, but gave up a run on a bunt ground-out to SS Wilmer Difo.  He settled down after that with scoreless innings in the top of the third, fourth and fifth inning. In the top of the sixth inning, Syndergarrd gave up a solo homer to CF Victor Robles.  He finished up by retiring the last three batters he faced. His final line was two runs on one hits with two walks and six strikeouts in six innings. LHP Justin Wilson came in next and threw a scoreless top of the seventh inning. RHP Jeurys Familia followed with a scoreless top of the eighth inning. RHP Seth Lugo continued his struggles after he allowed a double to 2B Anthony Rendon, a single to LF Juan Soto and sacrifice fly to 1B Ryan Zimmerman. Lugo was taken out after 12 pitches for RHP Tim Peterson. Peterson gave up a wild pitch and an RBI single to Difo. Lugo's ERA is now 12.27. Peterson didn't allow any more runs in the inning.

The bats were silent for the first four innings, but woke up in the bottom of the fifth inning after catcher Wilson Ramos singled and after a force-out  by 3B Jeff McNeil, SS Amed Rosario reached on an error by Rendon. After that they weren't able to score any runs after CF Juan Lagares and Noah Syndergarrd both struck out. In the bottom of the seventh inning, McNeil and Rosario both singled with two outs, by pinch-hitter J.D Davis struck out to end the threat.  In the bottom of the eighth inning, LF Brandon Nimmo walked, but 1B Pete Alonso and 2B Robinson Cano struck out.

The Mets are off tomorrow and return to action on Saturday April 6 at 1:10 p.m. against the Nationals.

Mets vs. Marlins Game 6 Recap

The New York Mets defeated the Miami Marlins 6-4 tonight to sweep their three-game series and improved their record to 5-1. RHP Jacob deGrom had another incredible performance with 14 strikeouts in seven scoreless innings. This is a career-high in strikeouts for deGrom. He gave up three hits with one walk. He has started the season with 13 consecutive scoreless innings combined with 26 scoreless innings dating back to the end of last season for a combined total of 39 scoreless innings. degrom tied Bob Gibon for most consecutive quality starts (three runs or less in six innings) with 26. deGrom had his 31st consecutive start of allowing three runs or less. He is the first Met pitcher to have 10 strikeouts or more in his first two starts. After deGrom was taken out, LHP Luis Avilan threw a scoreless bottom of the eighth inning, but Avilan stayed in for the bottom of the ninth and gave up three runs. RHP Robert Gsellman followed and gave up a run in the ninth. RHP Edwin Diaz had to come in to close it out and he got the last out to pick up his third save.

The offense was held scoreless in the top of the first inning, but broke through in the top of the second inning after CF Keon Broxton singled and SS Amed Rosario hit an RBI triple. In the top of the third inning, deGrom capped out his dominant performance with a solo homer, the second homer of his career. He is the 12th Mets pitcher to have at least two career homers. RF Brandon Nimmo followed with a walk and 1B Pete Alonso hit a RBI double. Alonso's double had an exit velocity of 107 mph. It was his fourth double of the season and fifth extra base hit. In the top of the seventh inning, Alonso singled and 2B Robinson Cano drove him with an RBI double. In the top of the eighth inning, 3B J.D Davis reached on an error and came around to score on an RBI single by 1B Dominic Smith. Smith scored on an RBI single by catcher Wilson Ramos.

The Mets next game is their home opener against the Washington Nationals tomorrow afternoon at 1:10 P.M.

Mets vs. Marlins Game 5 Recap

The New York Mets defeated the Miami Marlins 6-5 tonight for their second consecutive win and improved their record to 4-1. The offense jumped out to a fast start with five runs in the top of the first inning. LF Brandon Nimmo and 3B Jeff McNeil singled and RF Michael Conforto walked to load the bases. Catcher Wilson Ramos drove in Nimmo and McNeil with a two-run single. 1B Dominic Smith followed with a two-run single. SS Amed Rosario hit a RBI double. The bats went quiet until the top of the seventh inning. Ramos and Smith both singled and third baseman J.D. Davis walked to load the bases for Nimmo. Nimmo was hit by a pitch on the hand, which brought home the run, but he had to leave the game. Preliminary x-rays were negative. Smith and Ramos both had two hits tonight.

LHP Jason Vargas had to escape out of several jams, but wound up making it through five innings. His final line was: 8 hits, two runs, one BB, and 2 K's. He picked up his first win. RHP Robert Gsellman came in next and threw a scoreless bottom of the sixth inning. RHP Seth Lugo followed and gave up three runs in 1.1 innings. LHP Justin Wilson had to come on and threw 1.2 scoreless innings to close it out and he recorded his first save of the year.

The Mets next game is at 6:10 tomorrow night against the Marlins in the final game of the series.

Mets vs. Marlins Game 4 Recap

The New York Mets defeated the Miami Marlins 7-3 tonight and improved their record to 3-1 on the season. The Mets rallied back from one run down with one run in the top the sixth inning and four runs in the top of the ninth. LF Jeff McNeil drove in the first run of the game with an RBI single in the top of the second inning after RF Michael Conforto and catcher Wilson Ramos singled. In the top of the fourth inning, 3B J.D. Davis led off with a double and then moved to third base after a ground-out by Ramos. McNeil came up to the plate again and Davis scored on a wild pitch. CF Juan Lagares hit a solo homer in the top of the seventh to tie the game at three. In the top of the ninth inning, pinch-hitter Dominic Smith led off with a single and Lagares was hit by a pitch on his hand. LF Brandon Nimmo struck out, but SS Amed Rosario drove in the go-ahead run with a RBI single. 1B Pete Alonso broke the game open with a three-run homer.

LHP Steven Matz gave up three runs (one earned) on six hits with three strikeouts in 5.1 innings. RHP Tim Peterson followed with 1.2 scoreless innings. RHP Jeurys Familia threw a scoreless bottom of the eighth inning and picked up his first win. Closer RHP Edwin Diaz came on in the bottom of the ninth inning in a non-save situation and loaded the bases, but recovered and wound up striking out the next three batters he faced to end the game.

The Mets next game is tomorrow night at 7:10 P.M. against the Marlins.
