The New York Mets lost to the Houston Astros 12-8 in the first game of a doubleheader and dropped their record to 58-76. RHP Matt Harvey made his first start since July 14th and had a terrible outing. Harvey allowed seven runs on eight hits in two innings. This was the shortest start of his career. He had three strikeouts and no outs. Harvey hasn't been right all season and it might be best for him if he was shut down for the rest of the year. After he was taken out, LHP Tommy Millone came in and pitched a scoreless bottom of the third inning, but gave up three runs in the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings. RHP Jacob Rhyme who was acquired in the Curtis Granderson trade made his MLB debut in the bottom of the fifth inning and was able to get the last out in the inning and then pitched a scoreless bottom of the sixth inning. RHP Jamie Callahan who came over in the Addison Reed trade also made his MLB debut in the bottom of the seventh inning LHP Josh Smoker followed and was able to end the bottom of the seventh inning. RHP Erik Goedell pitched a scoreless bottom of the eighth inning.
The Mets offense was scoreless for the first three innings until 1B Dominc Smith hit a two-run homer in the top of the fourth inning. 3B Asdrubal Cabrera hit a RBI single in the top of the seventh inning. DH Wilmer Flores followed a grand slam. Cabrera also hit a solo homer in the top of the ninth inning.
