The New York Mets beat the Colorado Rockies 4-3 in Colorado this afternoon in the first game of a doubleheader for their fourth consecutive win and improved their record to 6-3. The offense struggled for the first two innings and wasted lead-off singles. In the top of the third inning, RHP Jacob deGrom led off with a single, CF Brandon Nimmo sacrificed DeGrom to second, SS Francisco Lindor grounded out to second, but then with two outs, LF Dom Smith walked and 1B Pete Alonso drove in the first run with an RBI single.
The bats went quiet for the next three innings and wasted another scoring chance in the top fourth, but then came alive in the top of the seventh.
In the top of the seventh, McCann led off with a single and then pinch-hitter Jonathan Villar followed with a RBI double to bring in McCann which tied the game. Nimmo then hit an infield hit an infield single and Lindor delivered with an RBI single for the go-ahead run.
RHP Jacob deGrom was oustanding once again and dominated for the first four innings and one point struck out nine Rockies hitters in a row. deGrom is the ninth pitcher in baseball history to strike out at least nine consecutive batters. He was let down by his defense after 2B Jeff McNeil made an error to start the inning and then RF Michael Conforto later misplayed a fly ball which led to a triple. DeGrom gave up three unearned runs in the inning, but was able to recover after that and didn't allow any more runs aftert that and stayed in for two more innings. He started out slow early in the first inning, but then he started to find his rhythm and he was dialing his fastball up to 100-101 mph.
His final line was 6 innings, 3 runs (0 earned), 1 walk and 14 strikeouts. He got his first win of the year and lowered his ERA to 0.45.
RHP Edwin Diaz came on in the bottom of the seventh and dominated in the inning and proceeded to strike out the side on 13 pitches. Diaz picked up his first save of the year.
The Mets next game is tonight at the Rockies at 8:25 p.m.
