Mets LHP David Peterson (Credits to David Banks-USA Today Sports) The New York Mets lost to the Chicago Cubs 16-4 tonight in Chicago at Wrigley Field for their second consecutive loss and dropped their record to 7-6. LHP David Peterson started out well with three scoreless innings, but it all unraveled for him in the bottom of the fourth. Peterson gave up three straight singles and then 3B J.D. Davis made a crucual error on a grounder that should have been an inning ending double play. Peterson then gave up a walk with the based loaded to bring in a run and then a bloop single to bring in another run and then two more runs crossed the plate as a result of a throwing error by RF Michael Conforto and was then taken out. His final line was 3.1 innings, 4 hits, 6 runs (3 earned runs), 2 walks and 3 strikeouts. RHP Robert Gsellman camee in next and gave up two runs on a RBI groundout and single as well as another run on a throwing error by SS Francisco Lindor on a wide throw to first base. Gsellman stayed in for the bottom of the fifth and gave up a lead-off double, a walk and a catcher interference which loaded the bases. He gave up a two-run single on a ground-ball that went on his leg instead of a groundball for a double play. Gsellman was then taken out. His final line was one inning, four hits, four runs and one walk. RHP Trevor Hildenberger had to come in the bottom of the fifth and gave up a RBI ground-out, but didn't allow any more runs in the inning. Hildenberger stayed in for the bottom of the sixth and loaded the bases and then gave up a grand slam to SS Javier Baez. He gave up another hit and hit by pitch after that and was then taken out. His final line was 1.1 innings, four hits, four runs, two earned runs, three walks and two strikeouts. LHP Aaron Loup had to come to get the last out in the bottom of the sixth. RHP Miguel Castro threw a scoreless bottom of the seventh. Infielder Luis Guillorme came in in the bottom of the eighth to help preserve the bullpen and gave up two runs on two singles and a double. The offense got off to a fast start after Lindor hit a solo homer in the top of the first. 2B Jeff McNeil led off the top of the second inning with a single and 1B Pete Alonso walked and then Davis late came through later in the inning with a RBI double. In the top of the fifth inning, Lindor led off with a single and Alonso followed with a two-run homer. The bats went quiet after that and were 1-5 with runners in scoring postion and left six men on base. The Mets next game is tomorrow night at the Cubs at 7:40 p.m.
