Mets Beat Rockies 2-1 to take series behind an outstanding start by Marcus Stroman

Mets RHP Marcus Stroman (Credits to J Downing-USA Today Sports) The New York Mets beat the Colorado Rockies 2-1 this afternoon in Colorado to take two out of three games in the series and improved their record to 7-4. In the top of the second inning, 1B Pete Alonso led off with a single against Rockies starter RHP Antonio Senzatela and then RF Michael Conforto followed with a double. 2B Jeff McNeil then hit a RBI ground-out to bring in Alonso. In the top of the fourth, Conforto singked with two outs, his second hit of the day and then McNeil reached on an error by 1B C.J. Cron. 3B J.D. Davis then came through with an RBI single, his first RBI of the season. The bats went quiet after that and weren't abel to score any more runs and capitalize with men on base. RHP Marcus Stroman started out well with a seven pitch bottom of the first inning and induced a double play by 2B Ryan McMahon. He had a quick bottom of the second inning with 11 pitches. Stroman worked out a walk and bunt single by Senzatela in the bottom of the third inning and didn't allow any runs. He was helped out by his defense in the bottom of the fourth after 2B Jeff McNeil made a diving play to rob McMahon and then Nimmo robbed 3B Trevor Story of an extra base and Alonso fielded a ground-ball by RF Charlie Blackmon. Stroman continued his successs in the bottom of the fifth and sixth with 1-2-3 innings. He ran into some trouble in the bottom of the seventh after Story doubled and Blackmon drove in Story with a RBI single, but he came back to strike out to 1B C.J. Cron and 3B Josh Fuentes to end the inning. Stroman stayed in for the bottom of the eighth and had a flashy first out after he caught a comebacker back to the mound behind his bag and threw to first on a seven hopper for the first out of the inning. He struck out catcher Dom Nunez and pinch-hitter Yonathan Diaz and was taken out after the inning. His final line was 8 innings, 3 hits, one run, one walk and five strikeouts. He picked up his third win and lowered his ERA to 0.89. RHP Edwin Diaz came on in the bottom of the ninth inning and got LF Ramiel Tapa to line out and a fly out by McMahon. Diaz gave up a single to Story with two outs, but then Story was thrown out on a caught stealing at second base on a perfect throw by catcher James McCann. The Mets are off tomorrow and return to action in Chicago on Tuesday night against the Cubs at 7:40 p.m.
