The New York Mets beat the Philadelphia Phillies 5-1 tonight for their third consecutive win and improved their record to 5-3. The offense got off to a fast start against Phillies starter former Met RHP Zack Wheeler after CF Brandon Nimmo led off with a single and then SS Francisco Lindor followed with a single. 1B Dom Smith then came up and drove in Nimmo for the first run of the game with a RBI single. 1B Pete Alonso followed by grounding into a double play, but he was still to bring in Lindor for the second run of the inning.
The bats went quiet after that for the next few innings until the bottom of the seventh after Lindor and Smith singled and then Alonso hit a sacrifice fly.
In the bottom of the eighth inning, RF Michael Conforto led off the inning with a hit-by-pitch and then catcher James McCann broke the game open with a two-run homer, his first as a Met.
LHP David Peterson made his second start of the season and had an outstanding outing after he struggled in the bottom of the first inning in his last start against the Phillies. Peterson gave up one run on two hits in six innings with 10 strikeouts. He didn't allow a hit until the top of the fifth on a solo homer by SS Jean Segura. The only other hit he allowed was a single to 1B Rhys Hoskins in the top of the sixth.
It was the second time in his career that he had double-digit strikeouts in a game after he had 10 against the Atlanta Braves on September 19, 2020.
Peterson was throwing much harder than in his first start around 93-94 mph on his fastball and also mixed in his offspeed stuff well on his change-up and slider. If he can maintain this kind of command, he will the potential to win 10-15 games this year.
RHP Jeurys Familia followed in the top of the seventh and got into immediate trouble after he gave up a lead-off walk to catcher J.T. Realmuto and then a single to Segura and was taken out.
LHP Aaron Loup came in with first and third and one out, but was able to get out of the jam after he got SS Didi Gregarious to ground out into a 6-4-3 double play.
Loup stayed in for the top of the eighth and had a 1-2-3 inning with back-to-back strikeouts to end the inning.
RHP Edwin Diaz appeared in the top of the ninth and threw a 1-2-3 inning with two strikeouts to close out the game.
The Mets next game is tomorrow afternoon at home against the Phillies at 12:10 p.m.
