Mets Lose to Phillies 5-2 on Opening Day after bullpen blows lead in the eighth

Mets RHP Jacob deGrom (Credits to NYPost.com) The New York Mets lost to the Philadelphia Phillies 5-2 tonight in Philadelphia on Opening Day and dropped their record to 0-1. RHP Jacob deGrom had another outstanding start with six scoreless innings and was taken out after the bottom of the sixth with 77 pitches since he was on a pitch counrt for his first start. deGrom gave up three hits and two walks with seven strikeouts. He was relying on a lot on his fastball and throwing hard at 100-101 mph. It's a shame that deGrom can't get a win no matter if it's the bullpen or lack of run support. He deserves better and will hopefully get some wins this year over the course of the season. RHP Miguel Casto came in next in the bottom of the seventh and threw a scoreless innings, but it all unraveled for reliever RHP Trevor May in the bottom of the eighth. May started out well striking out centerfield Adam Haseley, but then gave up a single to pinch-hitter Brad Miller, walked LF Andrew McCutchen, and then a single to 1B to Rhys Hoskins which loaded the bases. May was then pulled for LHP Aaron Loup and then Loup got into immediate trouble and hit RF Bryce Harper which brought in a run. He then allowed a RBI single to catcher J.T. Realmuto to tie the game. Loup was able to get the next batter 3B Alec Bohm to hit a ground-ball to 3B Luis Guillorme, but Guillorme made a throwing error at home plate which scored Harper and Hoskins. Loun then gave up a sacrifice fly to SS Didi Gregarious before finally getting out of the inning. The offense was held scoreless for the first three innings until the top of the fourth after 1B Pete Alonso and 3B J.D. Davis walked and two batters later, catcher James McCann drove in a run with an RBI single. LF Brandon Nimmo followed with a single to load the bases and then deGrom helped out his own cause with a RBI single. CF Kevin Pillar then grounded into a double play to end the inning and cut the rally short. The bats went quiet after that and they didn't do much until the top of the ninth after Pillar and SS Francisco Lindor singled with two outs and then RF Michael Conforto drove in Pillar with a RBI single. Alonso came up and just missed a three-run homer and flew out at the warning track in right field for the last out of the game. The Mets next game is tomorrow night at the Phillies at 7:05 p.m.
