< Mets Starter RHP Taijuan Walker (Credits to MetsMerizedOnline.com) The New York Mets beat the Miami Marlins 3-2 this afternoon on the homer opener and improved their record to 2-2 on the season. RHP Taijuan Walker had a strong outing and didn't allow a hit for the first four innings until the top of the fifth after he gave a single to 3B Brian Anderson, but didn't any runs. Walker ran into the trouble in the top of the sixth after he gave a lead-off single to 2B Jon Berti and an RBI double to LF Corey Dickerson which tied the game and he was taken out after the inning. Walker's final line was six innings, four hits, two runs, two walsk and four strikeouts. He threw as hard as 97 mph on his fastball and averaged 95.4 on his fastball. Walker threw 30 pitches at 95 mph or more, which was the most he's thrown since 2017. RHP Migeuk Castro came in next and threw a scoreless top of the seventh inning in 10 pitches. RHP Trevor May followed with a scoreless top of the eighth with one hit and one strikeout. RHP Edwin Diaz came on in the top of the ninth and had a solid first outing of the year with a scorless frame and had a walk with one strikeout. . The offense struggled to get a timely hit through the first four innings with runners on base and was 0-5 with RISP. In the bottom of the fifth with one out, SS Francisco Lindor singled, RF Michael Conforo was hit-by-pitch abd 1B Pete Alonso walked to load the bases. LF Dom Smith came up and was robbed of an extra base hit due to an incredible catch by Marlins CF Starling Marte, but it was still good enough for a sacrifice fly to bring home Lindor. The bats went quiet for the next few innings until the bottom of the ninth when 2B Jeff McNeil led off on a game-tying home run on his 29th birthday. Catcher James McCann followed with a strikeout, but then pinch-hitter Luis Guillorme singled and CF Brandon Nimmo doubled which moved Guilorme to third. Lindor was then walked intentionally to load the bases and Conforto came up and was down 1-2 in the count and appeared to stike out, but instead the home plate umpire Ron Culpa ruled pitch hit Conforto's elbow pad and the umpires reviewed the play, they upheld the call which brought in the winning run. Marlins manager Don Mattingly argued the call and Mattingly argued that the umpires could review whether the ball hit Conforto or not. The umpires said that ther wasn't enough for them to overturn the call. The Mets have an off day tomorrow and return to action on Saturday, April 10 at 1:10 p.m. against the Marlins.
