The New York Mets defeated the Cincinnati Reds 2-0 tonight and improved their record to 58-74. The Mets offense got on the board early in the top of the first inning and scored two runs. 3B Wilmer Flores hit a RBI double and catcher Kevin Plawecki followed with another RBI double. After the first inning, The Mets managed just two hits for the remaining eight innings.
RHP Rafael Montero got the the start and had the best outing of his career. Montero gave up three runs and four walks in 8 1/3 shutout innings and was able to get his third win.. He had eight strikeouts. Montero was able to pitch into the bottom of the ninth inning and recorded an out before allowing two consecutive hits and an intentional walk. This was the longest start of his career and second most amount of strikeouts. In his last four starts, he has gone 2-2 with a 2.10 ERA. Montero has been pitching with more confidence and has been throwing strikes and attacking the strike zone. Hopefully he can keep this up and develop into the kind of the pitcher that he was expected to be when he came up in 2014. RHP AJ Ramos came in next to close it out and picked up the last two outs and picked up his 26th save on the season.
