The New York Mets lost to the Chicago Cubs 14-3 tonight to snap their four-game winning streak and drop their record to 29-34. RHP Zack Wheeler got the start and had a rough outing and was not able to make it out of the second inning. Wheeler allowed a leadoff homer to 1B Anthony Rizzo in the top of the first inning. In the top of the second inning, it all unraveled for him after he allowed seven runs. Wheeler allowed a based loaded walk to Rizzo and then gave up a grand slam to 2B Ian Happ. He gave up another run on a RBI single by SS Addison Russel. Wheeler was finally taken out in the top of the second inning after allowing 3B Kris Bryant and RF Jayson Heyward singled and Russel drove them home with a two-run double. LHP Josh Smoker came in next and did an admirable job. Smoker allowed three runs in four innings, while throwing 81 pitches. RHP Neil Ramirez followed and allowed a run in 2 1/3 innings. LHP Josh Edgin allowed a two-run homer to 3B Javier Baez in the top of the ninth.
The Mets offense got off to a fast start after LF Yoenis Cespdes hit a RBI double in the bottom of the first inning. They weren't able to score any more runs until the bottom of the inning after 1B Lucas Duda and 2B Neil Walker hit back-to-back homers.
