Mets Lose To Red Sox 8-6 After Scherzer Struggles

 The New York Mets lost to the Boston Red Sox 8-6 tonight at Fenway Park in the second game of a doubleheader and dropped their record to 46-52.

RHP Max Scherzer got off to a tough start in the bottom of the first after he gave up a lead-off homer to CF Jarren Duran.

Scherzer's struggles continued in the bottom of the second inning after he gave up another lead-off homer to 1B Triston Casas.

Scherzer had scoreless innings in the bottom of the third and fourth, but in the bottom of the fifth gave up a solo homer to SS Yu Chang.

Scherzer had more difficulties in the bottom of the sixth after he gave up a two-run homer to Casas and was taken out after the inning.

His final line was six innings, five runs, two walks and seven strikeouts.

RHP Trevor Gott followed in the bottom of the seventh and got into trouble after he gave up a RBI single to LF Masataka Yoshida and a two-run homer to DH Justin Turner and was taken out after recording only out in the inning.

LHP Josh Walker had to come in to get the last two outs in the inning.

RHP Drew Smith threw a scoreless bottom of the eighth.

The Met offense was held scoreless for the first three innings until the top of the fourth after 2B Jeff McNeil hit a two-run single and then came around to score on a throwing error by catcher Jorge Alfaro.

The bats did not do much until the top of the ninth after 1B Pete Alonso hit a one-out triple and then catcher Francisco Alvarez followed with a RBI single.

Two batters later, DH Mark Vientos hit a RBI single and then 3B Brett Baty followed with a RBI single.

DH Daniel Vogelbach then pinch-hit with two outs, but flew out to end the game.

The Mets next game is tomorrow night, Sunday, July 23 at the Red Sox on ESPN Sunday Night Baseball at 7:10 p.m.
