Mets Lose to Padres 6-2 Going Into All-Star Break

 The New York Mets lost to the San Diego Padres 6-2 at Petco Park this afternoon to lose two out of three games in the series and dropped their record to 42-48 heading into the All-Star break.

RHP Max Scherzer got off to a rough start in the bottom of the first after he gave up a lead-off double to 2B Ha-Seong Kim and two batters a double to RF Fernando Tatis Jr.

Scherzer then gave up a three-run homer to 3B Manny Machado.

Scherzer was able to settle down with scoreless innings in the bottom of the second, third and fourth, but ran into more trouble in the bottom of the fifth.

Scherzer gave up a one-out single to Tatis Jr and then a two-run homer to Machado, his second of the game and was taken out after the inning.

Scherzer's final line was five innings, six hits, five runs, three walks and seven strikeouts.

LHP T.J. McFarland came in next in the bottom of the sixth and gave up a one-out RBI single to CF Trent Grisham.

RHP Grant Hartwig followed and threw 1.2 scoreless innings.

RHP Dominic Leone threw a scoreless bottom of the eighth.

The Met offense struggled with men on base and wasted a based loading scoring opportunity in the top of the second after catcher Francisco Alvarez grounded into a double play with bases loaded and one out.

In the top of the fourth, they had another based loaded opportunity with one out but DH D.J. Stewart and Alvarez struck out to end the threat.

In the top of the eighth, 2B Luis Guillorme hit a double to lead off the inning and then CF Brandon Nimmo followed with a walk.

LF Mark Canha then hit a two-run double, but SS Francisco Lindor grounded out and 1B Pete Alonso grounded into a double play to end the threat.

In total, the offense hit four inning-ending double plays and went 1-6 with runners in scoring position leaving six runners on base.

The Mets are now off for the next four days due to the All-Star Break and return back to action on Friday, July 14 at home against the Los Angeles Dodgers at 7:10 p.m.
