Mets Beat Yankees 9-3 Powered By Alonso

The New York Mets beat the New York Yankees 9-3 tonight at Yankee Stadium and improved their record to 47-53.

The Met offense got on the board immediately in the top of the first after CF Brandon Nimmo led off with a double and three batters later, 1B Pete Alonso drove in Nimmo with a RBI single off RHP Domingo German.

After a scoreless top of the second, SS Francisco Lindor doubled with two outs in the top of the third and 2B Jeff McNeil walked.

Alonso came up next and delivered once again with a three-run homer.

The bats did do much in the next two innings, but in the top of the sixth Alonso capped off a stellar night at the plate with his second homer a solo shot and 5th RBI of the game.

DH Daniel Vogelbach followed with a solo homer to extend the lead to 6-0.

In the top of the seventh, Lindor reached on an infield hit with one out and then advanced to second on a throwing error by SS Anthony Volpe.

McNeil followed with a RBI single.

In the top of the ninth, Nimmo walked with one out and then Lindor followed with a single and reached second on an error by CF Harrison Bader.

McNeil came up next and broke the game open with a two-run double for his second and third RBI of the game.

RHP Justin Verlander had a solid outing throwing six scoreless innings.

Verlander gave up two hits and four walks with six strikeouts.

He picked up his fifth win and lowered his ERA to 3.24.

LHP Brooks Raley came in next in the bottom of the seventh and gave up a RBI double to Volpe and was then taken out.

RHP Dominic Leone came in with the based loaded, but was able to get DH Giancarlo Stanton to fly out on a sacrifice fly and then struck out 1B Anthony Rizzo to end the inning.

RHP Grant Hartwig followed in the bottom of the eighth and got into trouble in the bottom of the eighth after he loaded the bases with two hits and one walk and recorded only out in the inning before getting taken out.

RHP David Robertson had to come in and retired pinch-hitter Ben Rortvdeft on a RBI ground-out and then retired RF Jake Bauers on a ground-out to end the inning.

RHP Adam Ottavino closed it out with a scoreless bottom of the ninth.

The Mets next game is tomorrow night, Wednesday, July 26 at the Yankees at 7:05 p.m.
