Mets Beat Nationals 8-1 Powered By Four Homers and Stellar Outing from Peterson

The New York Mets beat the Washington Nationals 8-1 tonight at Nationals Park for their third consecutive win and improved their record to 67-58.

The Mets offense was held scoreless against RHP Jake Irwin for the first two innings until the top of the third after SS Francisco Lindor doubled with one out and then RF Juan Soto walked.

LF Brandon Nimmo followed with a RBI single and two batters later, 2B Jeff McNeil drove in Soto and Nimmo with a two-run double.

DH Mark Vientos followed with a two-run homer.

In the top of the sixth,  3B Brett Baty led off with a towering homer in left-centerfield in the second deck.

In the top of the seventh, Soto led off with a homer.

In the top of the ninth, McNeil hit a solo homer with two outs.

LHP David Peterson had a spectacular start allowing one run on four hits in eight innings.

He gave up one walk with 10 strikeouts.

Peterson was in complete command and bounced back after blowing a six-run lead in his last start. 

He showed why he has the ace of the staff this season.

He picked up his eighth win and lowered his ERA to 3.18.

RHP Ryne Stanek closed it out with a scoreless bottom of the ninth.

The Mets next game is tomorrow night, Wednesday, August 20 at the Washington Nationals at 6:45 p.m.
