How Should The Mets Handle Their Crowded Outfield?

Last season, the Mets really struggled with getting any offensive production from their outfielders and had one of the worst outfields in MLB. This season, the Mets actually have the opposite dilemma and are trying to figure out how to incorporate their 4 outfielders into the starting lineup. Right now with Juan Lagares's injury, the Mets starting outfield has been Eric Young Jr, Curtis Granderson, and Chris Young. When Lagares comes back, the Mets will have to decide who plays every day and who to put in a platoon situation. I think that Lagares needs to be the lineup every day as the starting CF. His defense is spectacular and can really make a huge impact. He is also becoming a much improved hitter and is more selective at the plate. That leaves Chris Young, Eric Young Jr, and Curtis Granderson to fill out the other two outfield spots. I think that when the Mets face lefty pitching, they should start Young Jr and Chris Young and bench Granderson. Granderson really struggles against lefties, so it makes more sense for him to sit against a tough lefty. Even though Eric Young Jr is a much weaker hitter from the right side, I think there's a better chance he will get a hit against lefties than Granderson. He also brings speed to the lineup and can distract the pitcher by putting a lot of pressure on the base paths. Chris Young provides power in the lineup, which is something the Mets really lack. He has also shown to be a real solid defensive player. When the Mets face righty pitching, they should start Granderson, Lagares, and Chris Young. Granderson is much more comfortable against righty pitching and Chris Young Jr can also hit righties well. I don't see Eric Young Jr as an everyday player. I think he is best suited in a platoon situation. He has not shown to hit well enough to be an everyday outfielder. I think that Chris Young and Lagares can also bat leadoff as well as EY.

It will be very interesting to see how Terry Collins handles the outfield situation once they are at full strength. I think there will be constant changes and alternating in the outfield so each outfielder can get playing time. This will be an ongoing debate throughout this season.

Game Postponed.

Tonight's Mets and Phillies game scheduled for 7:05 PM has been postponed due to rain. The Mets will head to Colorado to face the red-hot Rockies in a three game series, followed by a trip to South Beach this weekend. I have not yet received any word on when the game will be made up, or how the Mets intend to handle the rotation. My best bet is the Phillies and Mets will play a day-night double header either in Philly the next time around, or in New York on Mother's day weekend.

Stay tuned...

Today's Headlines: Jon Neise, Phillies, Rain

As we slog through another rainy day here on the East coast, I provide you Mets fans with the top stories to take into not only tonight's game, but into the month of May.

Jon Neise: After an alarming spring training where Jon was sent to New York twice for MRI's, he has silenced all critics in April. After last night's 6-1 victory over the Phillies, Neise is now 2-2 with a 2.2 ERA on the year. As I've repeated over and over again on this blog, the Mets rely so much on their starting rotation to win games. Maybe their best pitcher of all this season is Jon Neise, who began the year on the 15-day DL. Neise has had the bad fortune of pitching in horrendous weather this April, but he's not complaining and his numbers show why.

Phillies: Man, remember the intense rivalry from 2008-2011? It seemed the Phillies were always coming out on top of our beloved Mets, whether it be on the field or in the standings. Well, since 2011, the Mets are 14-6 in Philadelphia. Currently, they are the only national league team with such a record over the Phillies. Last night, the Mets picked up right where they left off last season. A 6-1 win on a sloppy rainy night proved the 2014 Mets can keep the streak going in Philadelphia. Another note I'd like to add is the Mets' absolute dominance of Phillie's ace Cole Hamels. Hamels is 7-14 with a 4.65 ERA against New York, including a drubbing in last night's contest. The rivalry is as quiet as can be now, thanks to the dominance of the Phillies by our Mets.

Rain: Despite a 90-minute rain delay, the Mets and Phillies were able to get their game in last night. Tonight, the forecast doesn't look any better. In fact, it looks worse. Expect tonight's game to at least begin in a rain delay, if not postponed altogether. As always, check Queensfaithful for updates.

Post Game: Mets 6, Phillies 1

On a cold, rainy night in Philadelphia, The Mets (15-11) defeated the Phillies (13-13) by the score of 6-1. The Mets have now won 5 of their last six games. The Mets also continued their dominance at Citizens Bank Park, where they are 14-6 the past three seasons. Below are the key players from last night's W:

Ruben Tejada needs every hit he can get, and last night all of his base hits were huge. Tejada drove in a two men to break the game open to put the Mets up 6-1. The Mets need Tejada to just be average offensively, and above average defensively. So far, Ruben's defense has been up to the task, but the offense has been sluggish. Last night was a good night for Ruben, and he was smiling again.

Jon Neise pitched excellent baseball in terrible conditions, as he always does. Jon threw seven 1-run innings. A solo home run to Marlin Byrd in the fourth inning was the only hiccup on an otherwise superb night for Neise. After a wild spring training, where Jon battled a few nagging injuries, he has come out full force in 2014.

Daniel Murphy is one of the streakier players on the Mets' roster, and right now he's in his hot streak. Murphy and Tejada won this game offensively for the Mets. Daniel went 3-5, upping his average over the .300 mark. Sometimes we forget how good Murphy is when he's hot. As the Mets wait for Wright and Granderson to wake up, they'll need Murphy to drive in runs.

Next up, the Mets and Bartolo Colon face the Phillies in the second game of a two game series Wednesday night in Philadelphia.

Game 25: Mets Starting Lineup and Pitching Matchup

Mets Starting Lineup
1. Eric Young Jr-LF
2. Daniel Murphy-2B
3. David Wright-3b
4. Chris Young-CF
5. Curtis Granderson-RF
6. Josh Satin-1b
7. Travis d'Arnaud-Catcher
8. Ruben Tejada-SS
9. Jon Niese-LHP

The pitching matchup is Jon Niese ( 1-2, 2.45 ERA) vs. Cole Hamels ( 0-1, 3.00 ERA)

Should we buy into the Mets 14-11 start?

On March 1st, I looked ahead to the Mets April schedule and worried. I looked at the 25 man roster and worried. I looked at upper management and once again, worried.

Sitting here typing this on Tuesday, April 29th, I am not worrying, but should I? Should we? The Mets are 14-11 in a month where many predicted they would go 10-17. Lets also not forget, the season opened 0-3. Since then, the Mets have gone 14-8 and have won five of seven series. Overall, the Mets have won five of eight series.

"We feel good where we are," Terry Collins told the NY Daily News. Collins also added, "We are not happy that we only have the wins we have. We thought we could have won a couple more."  Terry is most likely referring to games like Saturday, where the Mets lead 5-0 in the middle innings before losing 7-6 in ten. I love the fact that Terry is angry they don't have more wins. While 14-11 is nice, it's time to get better.

The key to the Mets success has been winning series. While the Mets lineup sits next to last in the national league in batting average, their pitching ERA is sixth-best. We all knew heading into the season that the Mets' strength would be their starting pitching.

With the toughest part of their schedule over, the Mets will look toward a nine game road series where they can continue building momentum, hoping Wright and Granderson begin hitting for power, and hope the bullpen stays effective. The Mets biggest surprise has been their bullpen. Already on their third closer of the season, Mets pitching coach Dan Warthen and bullpen coach Ricky Bones have kept this area of the Mets pitching as well as possible.

Not to be fooled, though, the Mets were 10-9 after 19 games in 2013. Also, they led the wild card after the All-Star break in 2012. Both seasons, the Mets finished with a lowly 74 wins. Five months of the season remain, and predictions still say the Mets will taper off, but as a die hard Mets fan, I have to keep feeling optimistic that our pitching will keep us in contention all the way to September.

Update on Noah Syndergarrd and Rafael Montero

There was a lot of hype coming into this season for the Mets top two pitching prospects Rafael Montero and Noah Syndergarrd. So far, neither of them has disappointed.
Syndergarrd has a record of 3-2 with a 5.04 ERA. He has had 21 k's and 10 walks. He's given up only  3 homers in 25 innings. In his last start against the Tacoma Rainers, he gave up 3 runs in 6 innings. I'm pleased with how Syndergarrd has been able to limit his homers, especially since he is pitching in a very hitters friendly park in Las Vegas. I'd like to see him keep his walks down. I think he'll start to develop better control as he matures this year.
Montero has a record of 3-0 with a 3.95 ERA. He's had 27 k's and only 8 walks. He's also given up only 3 homers in 27.1 innings. In his last start, he gave up 3 runs in 6 innings against the Tacoma Rainers. I love Montero's control for such a young pitcher. It's not too often that you see Triple A pitchers with more than a 3-1 strikeout to walk ratio. I think his control will prove to very effective for him as he continues to progress to the Major Leagues.
It will be interesting to see when Syndergarrd and Montero finally make their much anticipated ML debuts. When they come up, there will be a lot of questions about whether the Mets make them starters or have them start out in the bullpen. I think it'd be best for the Mets to have them start out in the pen in the 8th inning or as closer. They don't have a shutdown 8th inning guy or closer and need to stabilize their back end of the bullpen.

New York Mets weekend recap

Over the weekend the Mets faced the Miami Marlins, beating them two games to one in the series. With the series victory, the Mets secured a winning record (6-4) over the past ten games. Below are the highlights from a wild weekend in case you missed it.

Curtis Granderson got his second walk off RBI of the season on Friday night against Marlins' closer Steve Cishek. It's been a tough start for Curtis, but his walk-off was huge in a game the Mets trailed 3-2 in the ninth.

Dillon Gee tossed eight shut out innings in the rubber game against the Marlins on Sunday afternoon. Dillon threw a season high 110 pitches in Sunday's contest, making this the most pitches he's thrown since his last DL sting a few years back.

Zack Wheeler struck out 10 batters before being pulled after the 6th inning on Friday. Jennry Mejia was the opposite, losing a 5-0 lead on Saturday.

Bobby Abreu and Chris Young each hit a home run at Citi Field. Abreu's home run was his first in a Mets uniform. Chris Young's was his second.

Kyle Farnsworth threw his worst pitch of his season on Saturday night, resulting in a 10th inning go ahead home run by Marlins' catcher Jarred Saltalamacchia.

Carlos Torres continued his dominate relief pitching on Sunday as he tossed a 1-2-3 ninth inning.

On another note, the Mets banned New York Post beat writer Mike Puma for his comments he made in an article about Bartolo Colon's weight. The Mets would not allow their players to talk to reporters until Puma was removed from the locker room.

Post Game: Mets 4, Marlins 0

This afternoon, at Citi field, the Mets (14-11) defeated the Marlins (11-14) by the score of 4-0. The Mets finish their 10 game home stand with a 6-4 record, after starting with a 1-2 record. The Mets continue to stay in sole possession of second place. Below are the players who impacted today's contest:

Dillon Gee-first and foremost Dillon Gee was outstanding today. After a day when the Mets lost a big lead and fell apart, Gee picked them right back up. Dillon tossed 110 pitches, the most since his blood clot scare a few seasons back, over eight three hit innings. Gee has been given the number 1 spot in the rotation and ran with it.

Chris Young/Lucas Duda-batting 5 and 6 in the lineup, respectively, both Chris Young and Lucas Duda got the Mets going. Young, who has raw power, hit a monster home run to make the game 4-0. From that point on the Mets never looked back. What more can be said about Lucas Duda right now. The man is as comfortable as we've seen in a Mets uniform. My belief is because he finally has first base to himself. Young and Duda are going to be staples in the Mets' lineup this season, and we need them to continue hitting.

David Wright- the Captain hasn't hit for much power in the early going, but he's driving in runs. After a Granderson walk, Wright delivered with a double off the left field wall to put the Mets up 1-0. On the defensive side of the ball, Wright led the way for the defensive-savy Mets with a diving catch and a few nifty double plays.

Next up, the Mets head on the road for a 9 game road trip beginning on Tuesday in Philadelphia.

Fantasy Update

For those of you who play Fantasy Baseball, you know that during the season guys get injured and it may be key to pick up that one guy who gets hot and carries your team to victory for a week or two. Here are a few guys that are probably on your free agent list and can really help your team out.

Chris Colabello: The Minnasota Twins first baseman and designated hitter is raking in the month of April, really getting off to a hot start. He's hitting .308 with 11 runs, 3 Homers, and 27 RBI. Now this may just be a rookie getting off to a hot start, but I believe he can least hitting next to Mauer in the middle of the order. He has great career numbers in the minors, and take advantage of his outfield eligibility while it lasts.

Carlos Ruiz: A catcher that can hit and available for pickup is very hard to find. Coming off a suspension and some injuries, he was not drafted in many leagues. For this reason he may be available in your league. He is on a tear right now with 1 Homer and 7 RBI in his last 6 games, also swatting multiple doubles along the way. This week he has 6 games at home in a friendly ballpark, Citizens Bank Field. Give him a look if you need a catcher or just a spot start catcher.

Chris Denorfia: If you may be in a deeper league and looking for sleepers, chances are this guy is still available and still putting up points. Every team needs that one guy who just gets his points every week and in the end is a solid contributor. If you are really digging, Denorfia is a great pick. He's hitting .324 with 1 Homer and 7 RBI. His value really comes from his 4 SB and his ability to hit doubles in a spacious Petco Park. He gets to play Arizona at the end of the week, a team that has a terrible pitching staff so take advantage of the matchup.

Post Game: Mets 4, Marlins 3

On a cold Friday night at Citi Field, the Mets (13-10) defeated the Marlins (10-13) by the score of 4-3. The Mets won on walk off fashion.

Curtis Granderson had his second walk off RBI of the season, and the home stand, when he lined the ball past first baseman Garett Jones. Good for Granderson, who still continues to slump, but has had a few big singles in the last few games. Curtis is working through it, but he's finally smiling again.

Zack Wheeler ran his pitch count up early, as he often does, and couldn't go seven innings on a night when the Mets needed length from their starting pitching. Wheeler did however continue the Mets' strong starting pitching in the early part of this season.

Gonzalez German served up two home run to Marlins' catcher Jarred Saltalamacia and first basemen Garett Jones. The Mets have taxed their bullpen on this home stand, and German seemed to take the brunt of it.

Omar Quintanilla not to get lost in the walk off win is Omar Quintanilla who had a game-tying base hit off Steve Cisek in the bottom of the ninth. Kirk Nieuwenhuis then doubled to keep the rally alive, setting up the game winner from Granderson.

Next up, the Mets continue their three game series against the Marlins on Saturday night at 7:10 PM with Jenrry Mejia on the hill.

Bryce Harper: Champ or Chump?

Bryce Harper has been the ESPN poster boy for the last 4 or 5 years. He has been hyped up more than you could imagine as the next great superstar. He was hitting homers out of professional stadiums at age 16.

After being taken with 1st pick in the draft in 2010 draft and with 2 major league seasons under his belt, the question is was he worth it? In his major league 270 games, he has hit .272 with 43 homers and 122 RBI's. Those are good numbers for a 21 year old, but not for this 21 year old. I could find plenty of other outfielders with better production with less baggage that comes along with him.

If you don't understand the reference to a recent incident, I will fill you in. In a game just last week, Bryce was pulled from the game for not hustling on a ground ball, which ironically was the same night that this program was distributed to fans. They must have meant hustle all of us as in rip us off pretending to be something he may not ever be.

I don't get this guy, he runs through a wall to catch a baseball last year, and now he won't run to first base. Maybe he isn't mentally tough enough to fight through his recent struggles this season which may show future problems when struggling. He was brought in to make this team champs, but so far all they have been is a bunch of chumps. He may have commercials, endorsements, and long flowing locks but can he get a ring is the real question?
That's A Clown Question Bro!

Postgame: Mets 4-Cardinals 1

On thursday afternoon, the Mets (12-10) defeated the Cardinals (12-11) at Citi Field to climb 2 games over .500 for the first time since April 16. Bartolo Colon earned his second win of the season. Below are the highlights from todays game:

Bartolo Colon-Bartolo filthy this afternoon. After 8 strike outs and seven-1-run innings, Colon gave way to Carlos Torres for the eight inning. Coming into the game with the highest earned run average of any Met, Colon kept the struggling Cardinal's hitters off balance with his change of speeds and location. The only negative---the guy can't bunt to save his life! Anyway, great start by the team's "ace" to help them secure three of four from the Cardinals.

Daniel Murphy-On an afternoon when there wasn't much hitting, Daniel Murphy delivered two big hits to help the Mets take the lead, and then add insurance in the 7th inning. Murphy is a professional hitter and looked much more comfortable back in his familiar 2 hole in the lineup.

Curtis Granderson-It was only one pinch hit at bat, but good for Granderson. Off a left hander pitcher nonetheless, Curtis lined an RBI single that put the Mets up 3-1. Granderson then finished the game in right field in replacement of Bobby Abreu, who had a double. It's only been a few games, but Granderson is beginning to hit line drives and smile again. Good for him.

Next up, the Mets welcome the Marlins to town for a weekend three-game set starting tomorrow night at 7:10 PM on the CW11. The Mets are now 4-3 on home stand, which they started 0-2.

Pitching matchup

NYM-Bartolo Colon vs STL Lance Lynn

Game time 1:10 PM, can be seen on SNY and heard on WOR 710

Today's News: Colon takes the hill, Granderson sits, wild night.

Today at 1:10 PM, the Mets turn to Bartolo Colon (1-3)  as they try and take three of four from the St. Louis Cardinals at Citi Field. Colon was much better in his last start against Atlanta than he was when Anaheim tagged him for nine runs. The pitching has been the story for the Mets in the early part of the season, and if they intend to take three of four from a very good team, it'll have to continue.

Also, veteran Bobby Abreu will get the start in right field, Terry Collins told the media. Terry also said he plans on starting Abreu once a week in the outfield. It has yet to be determined if that will stay the same once Juan Lagares comes back off the DL. Granderson, who finally snapped his 0 for skid last night, will sit in place of Abreu. Personally, I think Granderson sits down after a very encouraging night. Not only did he get a base hit, but he battled and drew a walk later in the game, and played exceptional defense. It was nice to see Curtis smiling in the ninth inning.

Last night might win the award for the wildest game of the season. The score is not portray this. Only four runs crossed the plate. Michael Whaca got the start for the red birds, and he was as wild as he was filthy. The man struck out nine Mets batters through three innings, tying a record. Everyone who knows baseball knows what strikeouts do to a pitcher's pitch count. As a result, Wacha had nearly seventy pitches in the fourth inning, and that's when things began to fall apart. Wacha twice walked home a run as the Mets plated two runs without an RBI hit. In fact, their only RBI hit of the night came when Duda blasted a solo home run in the later innings. The other storyline from yesterday's game was the wind. Wow, was it ever fierce! At one point both Wacha's hat and d'Arnauds body were thrown around like feather weights. The last out of the day came on a wind-driven fly ball to Curtis, who secured it right against the Citi Field wall. Wow, what a night.

We've reach 1,200 views...thank you.

Before I bore everybody with non baseball related news, I just want to take a minute to thank all of our viewers who have read and interacted with this blog for the last three months. It has been a goal of mine to start a Mets themed blogged for years now. After many half-hearted attemps, I finally found the right team to help me write a blog that will keep fans entertained and informed.

Andrew and I have been teammates on this blog since its first weeks, while Joe has just been added to ad an in depth discussion on various fantasy baseball, and MLB topics that Andrew and I do not cover. The three of us together will continue working on this blog as we hope 1,200 views turns into 1,500, followed by 2,000 and so on....

In addition to our facebook page, which  is directly linked to this website, we have opened up a twitter account, @QueensFaitfhul. We encourage all fans to hop aboard during this crazy ride we call the 2014 season. In time the Mets will get better. I feel it, you feel it, and the media feels it. Despite some wild games, we woke up on April 24 over .500 (11-10). With better times ahead, this is the blog to be reading, as we will constantly provide the best information possible. Game 21: Mets vs. Cardinals Starting Lineup and Pitching Matchup

Mets Starting Lineup
1. Kirk Nieuwenhuis-CF
2. Curtis Granderson- RF
3. David Wright-3B
4. Daniel Murphy-2b
5. Chris Young-LF
6. Lucas Duda-1b
7. Travis d'Arnaud- Catcher
8. Ruben Tejada- SS
9. Jonathan Niese-LHP

The pitching matchup is Michael Wacha ( 2-1, 1.73 ERA) vs. Jonathan Niese ( 0-2, 2.84 ERA)

The curious case of Ruben Tejada

Heading into spring training, the two biggest concerns for the New York Mets were first base and shortstop. At first base we had three competitors battling for one spot. In the end, Lucas Duda prevailed, and Josh Satin was awarded his back up. At shortstop, Ruben Tejada battled....Ruben Tejada. The funniest part, he's losing. Here's what I mean:

Let's take a look at Ruben's 2012 statistics. 2012 was the first year after Jose Reyes departed for the sunshine of Miami. Tejada finished the season playing in 114 games, hitting .289 with one home run and twenty-five runs batted in. In just over 500 plate appearances, Ruben Tejada reached his peak....at age 22. Normally you'd say that at age 22 you are developing into the type of player you may become at say, age 25. This is not the case for Ruben, who hit his peak in 2012.

In 2013, Tejada was handed the short stop job without a fight. He had earned his spot, hitting .289 the year before. If 2012 was Tejada's peak, 2013 proved why. Battling injuries all season, and mostly his entire career, Tejada battled a disappointing .202 with an OBP of .259. Remember, this man was the team's lead off hitter for the better part of 2012. Tejada's futile hitting found him back in triple-a for the first time in nearly two years.

Today, we watch a healthy Tejada struggle to regain any form of his past self. Many figured 2013 was a fluke season ravaged by injuries. Our general manager took shot after shot at the 24 year old short top all winter long. Many believed Sandy would make a move to strengthen our shortstop position, and not let Ruben hang out to dry. Instead, Tejada was handed the shortstop job on the basis of hope and lack of competition. With April winding down, the Mets are a respective 10-10. They have been able to accomplish this despite the fact that their shortstop and right fielder have given them nothing offensively. First base has now become one of the lesser problems of this ball club when you analyze the 24 year old shortstop on the decline. It's frustrating to watch. Something has to give...

Team recap: Bobby Abreu and team uniforms.

Today we take a look at a number of topics surrounding the Mets as we head into game 21 tonight against the St Louis Cardinals.

First and foremost, Bobby Abreu's promotion has caused a divide among the Mets fan base. Clearly, the Mets could have sat the struggling Granderson, who we will talk about in a minute, Monday night against a left handed pitcher, and opted to go with a right outfielder instead. Taking this all into account, the Mets still promoted Bobby Abreu in time for the series against the Cardinals, while optioning Andrew Brown to triple-a Las Vegas. Many radio personalities, news journalists, and fans feel that Abreu's promotion is the direct cause of Dave Hudgen's hitting philosophy: work a deep count. All throughout Bobby's career, he has been a high on base percentage guy with some pop in his bat. Other fans believe that Andrew Brown did nothing to deserve a promotion. Also, Brown's absence means the Mets have no right handed outfield options off of the bench. You be the judge

Secondly, I read a fascinating article today that said the Mets have worn seven different jersey combinations in the last seven days. The Mets have never been one to adopt a team jersey and stick with it for very long. I mean, I've been a fan since 2003 and we've at least had fifteen different jersey styles. Personally, I'm ok with this. We aren't the Yankees, Red Sox, or the Cubs, who seem to have stuck to one jersey their entire franchise's career. In any event,   Read more in the Wall Street Journal

500 and Counting for Pujols

The forgotten man it seems like these days, Albert Pujols may have risen from the dead this season. With 8 home runs already it seems that he may have found that once magical stroke that carried his former St Louis Cardinals to the fall classic on multiple occasions. Since the 10 year 250 million dollar deal with the Angels, Pujols has not been the same player, with his average dropping into the .250 range with decreasing power and run producing ability. Although injuries may have contributed to this decline in recent years, I believe that his approach at the plate may also be a contributing factor.

In his glory days, Albert would mash the ball to all fields with power and for average. Right center used to be a power alley for this great slugger, but is no more. Since joining the Angels in 2012, Pujols has not hit a single homer to the opposite field. This one dimensionality limits the ability to cover the plate and fight off multiple types of pitches. If you watch closely, Pujols struggles on outsides pitches, normally rolling over them and grounding out to the shortstop.

Even with the reduced numbers which were freakish to say the least, averaging 30 home runs and 100 RBIs in his first 12 seasons is inconceivable. Those may be the best starting 10-12 seasons for a career for any player in history. To hit 500 homers has only been accomplished by 25 other men, so with that we welcome Pujols to the club. There have been more players in history to achieve the 3000 hit plateau than to hit 500 home runs. I don't think Albert will be stopping there though, as he is still under contract until 2021. My personal prediction is that he will fall between 640-650 home runs suggesting that he retires after his current deal expires in his 40's.

A tip of the cap to one of my favorite players, and here's to hoping he can keep it up.

What is going on with Matt Harvey?

For those of you hearing Matt Harvey's name repeatedly on sports radio today, as well as reading about him on Twitter and Facebook's trending section, let's figure out whats going on.

As Matt Cerrone on Metsblog.com points out, this is the sixth month anniversary of Matt Harvey's Tommy John surgery. In celebratory fashion, Harvey tweeted a photo of himself in his hospital bed, after the surgery, giving the middle finger to the camera. The gesture is a shot at Tommy John surgery itself---one that has allowed pitchers to come back and perform even better than previously.

Not only has Harvey's tweet, but his entire Twitter account has been deleted. In a year where it is not at all about Matt Harvey, he is certainly making it about Matt Harvey. This is the latest in a saga of events, ranging from nude photos, to arguments with management about where to rehab, that Matt Harvey has taken the fans on.

In the end, this is no big deal. What Matt Harvey does off the field is completely separate from what he does on the field. And we all know how he is on the field. Matt isn't the first New York City athlete to bask in the limelight and cause headlines (see Alex Rodriguez). Before long Harvey will be back with the ball club and this nonsense will stop. In the meantime, he's clearly bored, and Mets brass wants him to shut up.

Top 5 things to consider when being a Mets fan

I thought I'd take a short break from Mets news and just discuss what it's like being a Met fan. I realize most readers of this blog are already Mets fans, so you can relate to this. While I feel like I've been a fan forever, I'm only 22. My father's generation of Mets fans have suffered much longer than I have. Today I share with you the top 5 unique characteristics of being a die-hard Mets fan:

5. We always have starting pitching- We'll start off our countdown with a positive aspect of being an Amazin's fan. From the arrival of Tom Seaver and Jerry Koozman, to the Doc Goodon and Ron Darling's of the world, and presently Matt Harvey and Zack Wheeler, the Mets have always had starting pitching. Consider the two ballparks the franchise has spent most of its time playing in — Shea Stadium and Citi Field—both pitcher friendly.

4. We never have enough hitting- In contrast to the previous entry, the Mets' history has lacked powerful bats. Sure, Mike Piazza, Carlos Beltran, David Wright, an Darryl Strawberry have all hit 30 home runs and driven in 100 runs in Mets uniforms, but overall, the franchise from Queens has not had the same luck on the offensive side of the ball as they have on the pitching side.

3. Playoff appearances are sparse-The Mets have been in existence for 52 year, yet they have only seven playoff appearances. On the upside, every appearance in the playoffs has seen the Mets go to the NLCS, and four times the World Series. Playoff appearances, division titles, national league pennants, and World Series rings are few and far between. When we get there, though, the city is fully behind us.

2. Tom Seaver- Call him whatever you like: the franchise, Tom-terrific, or simply the best you've ever seen. To every Mets fan in the world, Tom Seaver is our God we worship in baseball land. Tom-terrific is not only arguably the greatest Mets pitcher of all time, but he is arguably the greatest right handed pitcher of all time. The trade of 1977 that sent Seaver to the Reds broke the hearts of every
Mets fan around the country. How would Seaver possibly look good in a Reds' uniform? The fact is that by 1977 Seaver already chiseled his face in the Mets' Mount Rushmore. There was nothing, other than winning his inevitable 300th game, for Seaver to do in a Mets uniform. He was already the best ever.

1. The Phrase "You Gotta Believe"- From Tug McGraw's lips to God's ears in 1973. Signs of this historic phrase have been showcased in the stands at Shea Stadium and Citi Field for over 40 years. Plenty of times this simple phrase has kept heart aching Mets fans from giving up on the teams' seasons. No better example is in the wild-card playoff game of 1998. The Mets were the away team against the 1990's generation of the Red's "big red machine." Facing a playoff drought of ten years, fans screamed this iconic phrase back home in New York as they watched Al Leiter shutout the Reds and help the Mets advance to the playoffs. I don't know of any other unique phrase in baseball as powerful as the one us Mets fans scream year after year. And sometimes, it works.

Is Jennry Mejia the ace?

What keeps me positive in a time when the Mets seem to be, at best, a .500 team, is the fact that come opening day 2015, their starting rotation will be even better. Matt Harvey is scheduled to return, Zack Wheeler is expected to keep developing, Noah Syndergaard will be here, Rafael Montero is on the horizon, and Jennry Mejia is in the discussion.

The fact is, the New York Mets have four starters 25 and younger who have all been scouted in the Minor Leagues as can't miss prospects. The one pitcher who wasn't as highly touted, and one who has been forgotten over the years is Jennry Mejia.

This season, Mejia is 3-0 with a 1.99 ERA. Even better yet, the Mets are 4-0 when the Dominican right handed takes the mound. Since his call up at the ripe young age of 20 in 2010, Mejia has been effective when he's on the mound. As all of you Mets fans know, it's not Mejia's stuff that has kept him off of the mound the last few years, it's been injuries. This year, Mejia appears as healthy as ever and it's showing.

The way the Mets starting five is constructed in 2014, Jennry fall as the fifth starter. In reality, through the first 19 games, Jennry has been the Mets' best pitcher. In a year when the starting rotation is as solid as it's been since in ten years, Jennry Mejia is making a case that he belongs in the 2015 rotation with Harvey, Wheeler, and Syndergaard.

Post Game: Mets 2, Cardinals 0

The Mets (10-9) defeated the Cardinals (11-9) by the score of 2-0 Monday night. Jennry Mejia earned his third win of the season when newly named closer Kyle Farnsworth sealed the deal in the 9th. The Mets have won two in a row. Below are the stars of today's game:

Jennry Mejia-Mejia was brilliant tonight as he blanked a good Cardinals offense through six and two thirds innings. People tend to forget Mejia is only 24 years old and is very much in the Mets' starting pitching plans for the future. There can be an argument made that Mejia has been the best pitcher on the Mets' staff in this young season.

David Wright-not only did David continue his hitting streak to a season long 14 games, but he delivered the Mets' first run of the game with a broken bat single. Wright also turned a 5-4-3 double play in the 9th inning that all but sealed the deal for New York. The captain is heating up and opposition beware.

Travis d'Arnaud-Travis's struggles have been overshadowed by Granderson's slow start, but tonight Travis had two base hits, one resulting in the Mets' second run of the game.
Keith Hernandez has been saying d'Arnaud's swing has been looking a lot better, and tonight might be a sign of things to come.

Next up, the Mets face Adam  Wainwright and the Cardinals in game 2 at Citi Field. Dillon Gee will oppose Wainwright at 7:10 pm.

Game 19: Mets vs. Cardinals Starting Lineup and Pitching Matchup

7. Travis d'Arnaud- Catcher
8. Ruben Tejada- SS
9. Jenrry Meija-SP

Mets Call Up Bobby Abreu

The Mets announced today that they are going to call up Bobby Abreu from Triple-A. In all likelihood, Kirk Niewenhuis will be sent down. The Mets have been trying to find a lefty pinch hitter off of the bench. They're hoping that he can provide some power. Abreu hasn't played in the Major Leagues since the 2012 season with the Los Angeles Angels. He brings a lot of experience and success. He's a 2 time All-Star. He won a Silver Slugger Award. He was the Player of the Month for the NL and AL. He was also a member of the 30-30 Club. I'm hoping that Abreu can give some much needed pop to this bench. I think he will be effective against lefty pitching. It will be interesting to see what the Mets do with Abreu once Juan Lagares is activated off the DL.

Final Score: Mets 4, Braves 3

On Easter Sunday the Mets (9-9) defeated the Atlanta Braves (12-8) by the score of 4-3. The Mets won this game on a walk off sac-fly in the 14th inning by the slumping Curtis Granderson. The Mets have now evened the season series with the Braves 3-3. Below are the highlights from Sunday's affair:

Zack Wheeler started for the Mets and pitched six quality innings, surrendering three runs on six hits. Zack was pulled for a pinch hitter in the bottom of the 6th inning.

Curtis Granderson went 0-6 at the plate, but hit the game winning sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 14th to seal the deal for New York. Curtis, and the Mets, needed something to go his way in that inning and it was great to see a positive result in what has been a negative start for the Mets star right fielder.

The Bullpen was excellent in today's contest. Dice-K Matsuzaka threw three scoreless innings in relief, followed by one scoreless inning from the newly demoted Jose Valverde. Valverde also picked up the win in the game.

David Wright continues his 11 game hitting streak with four more hits today. As Ron Darling put it on today's broadcast, "it's only a matter of time before Wright gets into that power groove."

Next up, the St. Louis Cardinals come to town for a four game series. Personally, i'd sign up for a split of this series. Tomorrow night at 7:10 pm, Dillon Gee takes the ball for our Mets. Lets go Mets!

Quick Notes: Valverde, Ike, Granderson, Citi Field

Hello everyone, with school work and just plain old world interfering with the weekend, I have not been able to post on weekend Mets' news. This afternoon we will do a  run down of the latest New York Mets' news

First and foremost, the Mets have dropped the first 2 games to Atlanta, and try to salvage the series finale as we speak today.

Valverde: Feels like a long time ago that Jose was saving games for the Mets, right? Well, actually it was only one week ago. That's how fast the world has crumbled down on Valverde, who lost his closer job after surrendering a 3-run homer to Justin Upton on Saturday night. For the moment, Kyle Farnsworth is the closer.

Ike: The Ike drama came to an end Friday when the Mets shipped Ike to the Pirates in exchange for Zack Thorton and a player to me named later. This is the right move for many reasons. Number 1, it gives Duda and green light to hold down the first baseman's job for the forceable future. Number 2, Ike gets a fresh start in a new environment which he desperately needed. Lastly, the Mets acquire another valuable pitching prospect to add to a young core the Mets have been developing. Thorton may take over as the team's closer before long.

Granderson: Many Mets fans, including myself, still have the bad taste of the Jason Bay experiment in our mouths. Now, more than last year, we can taste it again thanks to Granderson's slow start. While not a conventional clean up hitter, Curtis has struggled to drive in runs all season. While it's still early, one has to wonder if Citi Field may be creeping into his head. For now, he will bat second in the order.

Citi Fied: Why oh why can't the Mets not only win, but hit, at Citi Field? It's becoming a problem year after year, and this one is no different. In contrast, the Mets are an over .500 road team over the last four or five years. This means, to me at least, if the team can play anywhere at or above .500 at home, they would have been playoff contenders every single season. Imagine that...

Post Game: Mets sweep! NY Mets 5, Arizona 2.

On wednesday afternoon the New York Mets defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks by the score of 5-2. Dillon Gee earned the win and Jose Valverde earned the save. This was the Mets' first sweep of the season, and also the first time they have reached .500 in the early campaign. Below are the top players from the game.

Dillon Gee: Gee needed only 74 pitches to get through 7 innings this afternoon in the desert. After two straight starts where Dillon blew his own lead in the 6th inning or later, he bounced back beautifully tonight while continuing the streak or strong starting pitching by the Mets. He kept the aggressive Diamondback hitters at bay all afternoon mixing in his breaking stuff.

Anthony Recker: Like Ron Darling noted when the Mets were in Los Angeles over the weekend, Anthony Recker always comes up with a big hit. Today was no different. In the second inning, Anthony hit a towering home run to give the Mets a 1-0 lead. They would never look back.

Eric Young: There's a reason Terry Collins makes the big bucks. It's for decisions like these. Young has started every game, but two, this season. After a slow start, he has been the catalyst atop the Mets order. Today he stole two of the mets four stolen bases. The other two were split by Murphy and Wright. Young is not only leading the team's running game, but he's leading their offense. On friday the Mets expect to have Chris Young and Curtis Granderson in the lineup. What does this mean for E.Y.? How about Kirk who had another RBI today. We may not know until 7:10 PM Friday night.

Next up the Mets face the Atlanta Braves Friday, April 18th at Citi field. The game can be seen on SNY and heard on WOR 710 AM.

Game 15: Mets vs. Diamondbacks Lineup and Pitching Matchup

Mets Lineup

1. Eric Young- LF
2. Daniel Murphy- 2b
3. David Wright- 3b
4. Ike Davis- 1b
5. Andrew Brown- RF
6. Kirk Niewenhuis- CF
7. Anthony Recker- Catcher
8. Ruben Tejada- SS
9. Dillon Gee- Pitcher

The pitching matchup is Dillon Gee ( 0-0, 5.03 ERA) vs. Brandon McCarthy (0-2, 7.78 ERA).

Post Game: Mets 9, Diamondbacks, 0

The Mets (7-7) defeated the Dbacks (4-13) by the score of 9-0 last night in Pheonix, Arizona. The Mets got a big game from their offense, starting pitching, and bullpen, in a shut out effort. The Mets are now at .500 for the first time this season. Previously, the Mets were 0-5 in games trying to get to .500. Below are the players that impacted last night's game:

Jennry Mejia: We'll start with the starting pitcher of the night. Mejia, when healthy, is an incredible pitcher to watch. People forget he is only 24 years old and is very much a part of the Mets' future.  Last night Mejia pitched 5 scoreless innings, surrendering 2 hits and striking out 3, while picking up his second win of the season. After 5 innings Jennry left the game with a blister problem on his middle finger. While Terry Collins pointed out this is always a concern with starting pitchers, Mejia is expected to make his next start. He is fun to watch.

Kirk Nieuwenhuis: Remember him? The odd man out in the outfield equation this spring, Kirk delivered for the Mets last night. After being called up from Triple A Las Vegas, where he was absolutely raking, Nieuwenhuis promptly went 3 for 4, with a home run, and 2 very nice catches in center. With the exception play of Nieuwenhuis last night, Terry Collins has yet another decision to make when Chris Young is activated from the DL.

Gonzales German: Minus a blown save my Valverde a few nights ago, the bullpen has been solid this road trip. German and others are being stretched out by Terry Collins over two or more innings. Last night German looked sharp, keeping the Diamondbacks from having any sort of rally in the late innings. Farnsworth pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to secure the win.

The Mets look for the series weep today at 3:40PM in Phoenix. The game can be viewed on SNY and heard on WOR 710 AM. Let's Go Mets!

Game 14: Mets vs. Diamondbacks-Starting Lineup and Pitching Matchup

Game 14: Mets vs. Diamondbacks

Mets Starting Lineup

1. Eric Young- Left Field
2. Daniel Murphy- 2nd Base
3. David Wright- 3rd base
4. Lucas Duda- 1st base
5. Andrew Brown- Right Field
6. Kirk Nieuwenhuis- Center Field
7. Travis d-Arnaud- Catcher
8. Omar Quintanilla- Shortstop
9. Jenrry Meija- RHP

The pitching matchup is Jenrry Meija ( 1-0, 4.09 ERA) vs. Bronson Arroyo ( 1-0, 4.82 ERA)

After an 0-3 start, Mets eye .500 in Arizona

I remember it well. Maybe it's because it only occurred two weeks ago, or maybe because the outcry was so loud against the New York Mets, but I remember when the Mets were 0-3. Their bullpen was in shambles. Their lineup was hideous. Their starting pitching was....good. That's where we begin the 6-4 turn around since the opening day series. The Mets starting pitching has kept them in every single game this season. Without it, I don't even want to think of where the Mets would be. Probably 2-10 or 3-9. While many bats remain cold, and many bullpen arms remain sketchy, the Mets starting pitching has held its own. Facing the toughest April schedule in all of baseball, we were left for dead. Gutsy wins against the Reds, Braves, and Angels have opened a few eyes in Met land. Will this hold up? Will the bats eventually come around? Will the injuries stay away? Of course the Mets are going to hit bumps this season. The team really isn't that good. But, maybe they weren't really that bad when they started the season 0-3. All we know is tonight they can climb to .500 for the first time this season, and finish a tough road trip no worse than 5-4. Stay tuned....

Todays News: Joel Hanrahan, injury updates, game tonight

Joel Hanrahan
Joel Hanrahan:The Mets will be among one of the many teams watching Joel Hanrahan's pitching audition. It has been reported that the Mets are viewing the audition with "interest" in signing Hanrahan for the back end of the bullpen. Ever since Vic Black's demotion, and Bobby Parnell's injury, the Mets have felt thin in the back of the bullpen. While Farnsworth and Valverde have looked good so far, how long can we reasonably expect this to last?

Injuries: Curtis Granderson and Juan Lagares both suffered injuries in last night's contest with the Diamondbacks. Granderson's x-rays came back negative, and it appears he will rest a few games before being re evaluated and hopefully inserted back into the lineup. On the other hand, Lagares appears headed to the 15-day DL. Kirk Niewunheis appears to be headed to NY to take his place. In other injury news, the Mets expect Chris Young to be back Friday.

Tonight's Game: Tonight the Mets play the second of three with the Arizona Diamonbacks. Jennry Mejia will oppose long-time Met nemesis, Bronson Arroyo. After already winning the opener, 7-3, the Mets eye the series victory tonight against a slumping Dbacks squad.

Post Game: Mets 7, Diamondbacks 3

Yesterday in Arizona, the Mets (5-6) defeated the Dbacks (4-11) by the score of 7-3. Below are the key highlights from the game:

Zack Wheeler started and pitched 6 1/3 innings surrendering 2 earned runs while picking up the victory. This was Wheeler's best start to date, as his breaking ball was spot on all game.

Lucas Duda was 4-5 in this game, picking up a couple of RBIs along the way. Lucas has swung the bat well this entire season, helping to anchor the middle of the lineup behind Wright and Granderson

Carlos Torres earned an 8 out save en route to the victory. Torres has had a phenomenal week beginning with the series in Atlanta.

Curtis Granderson and Juan Lagares both left this game with injury . Granderson crashed into the wall in the first, injuring his wrist, rib cage, and knee. Curtis stayed in the game for five innings before being taken out for precautionary reasons. Lagares, on the other hand, appeared to have pulled his hamstring and left the game immediately.

This was a nice win the for Mets, who can't wait to get home. Let's face it, the Diamondbacks stink. Blame it on the pitching or the Australia opening series, but the Dbacks look flat. The Mets took advantage and won the opening game of the three game set. If the Mets can take 2 of 3, they'll head home with a 5-4 road trip. I'd sign up for that any day of the week.

12 games in, is 5-7 acceptable?

Coming into the season, the Mets starred at the toughest April schedule in Major League Baseball. So far the Mets have played four-three game series against all over .500 baseball team, expect for the Angels (and we know they are better than 78 wins a year ago). Below is where the Mets stood in each series thus far, with a prediction for tonights series with Arizona:

Washington Nationals: The Mets opened the regular season facing the predicted division winner. Though the Mets held a lead in each game of the series, they were swept in disappointing fashion. Opening day hurt the most. The Mets not only had a bullpen implosion of epic proportions, but they lost their closer of the present and the future, Bobby Parnell, to Tommy John surgery. The starting pitching was strong in series number one, but the offense was too spotty, and the bullpen too dirty.

Cincinnati Reds: On a cold, damp, and dreary Friday night, the Mets notched their first victory of the year. Timely hitting, combined with just enough offense, sprinkled on top with Jose Valverde's first save of the year, was just the right formula for the Mets to get in the W column. Game 2 against the struggling Reds was even sweeter. After the Dillon Gee blew his own 2-1 lead in the 6th inning, the Mets seemed doomed. The offense needed one major boost it had been lacking in the first four gamed. Up to the plate comes Ike Davis. The "back up" first baseman took one gigantic swing while pinch hitting in the 9th inning, resulting in a walk-off grand slam. Looking to sweep the Reds and get to .500 on the early season, the Mets offense disappeared yet again on Sunday, resulting in a 2-out-of-3 series win for the Mets.

Atlanta Braves: Every Mets fan knows playing in Atlanta is NEVER easy. The Mets come into play 40 games under .500 in Atlanta since 1997. What was the most impressive part of this series was not the Mets winning it, but the Mets winning it in Atlanta. The trend of strong starting pitching, plus a new look and refueled bullpen, thanks to Kyle Farnsworth and Carlos Torres, resulted in the Mets taking 2-of-3 from the division winners.

L.A. Angels-The Mets 9 game road trip continued in Los Angeles versus Mike Trout and the disappointing Angels. The Mets and Angels traded extra inning wins in the first two games, only to have a lopsided win in game three, against Mets ace Bartolo Colon. Colon just looked awful in his third game of the year, letting back-to-back-to-back home runs in the first inning. The Mets didn't capitalize on their chance to win three straight series, but they ended play Sunday night 5-7, after an 0-3 start. I'll take it.

Up next, the Mets face the lowly 4-10 Arizona Diamondbacks before returning home to face the Braves. A successful 9 game road trip will be 5-4, meaning the Mets should, can, and probably will take 2 of three from Arizona. While Wright, Granderson, and d'Arnaud have yet to make an impact offensively, the pitching, bullpen, and Juan Lagaras have not let down.
