Mets Beat Nationals 5-4 After Pete Alonso Delivers a Walk-Off Homer

Mets RHP Trevor Williams (Photo Credits to Vincent Carcheitta-USA Today Sports) The New York Mets beat the Washington Nationals 5-4 this afternoon at Citi Field to sweep their doubleheader and three-game series and improved their record to 59-55. The offense was held scoreless for the first three innings until the bottom of the fourth after RF Michael Conforto led off with a double and 3B J.D. Davis followed with a RBI double. SS Jonathan Villar then singled and then catcher James McCann grounded into a fielder's choice which brought home a run. In the bottom of the sixth, Conforto led off with a single and then two batters later Villar hit a two-run homer. In the following inning, 1B Pete Alonso came up with one hit and capped out a stellar series with a walk-off solo homer, which is the second walk-off homer of his career. RHP Trevor Williams made his first start as a Met after he was acquried from the Chicago Cubs along with Javier Baez and had a strong outing starting out well with four scorless innings. Williams ran in trouble in the top of the fifth after he gave up a double to SS Adrian Sanchez and a single to catcher Tres Barrea and was taken out. RHP Seth Lugo came in next and then gave up a sacrifice fly to pinch-hitter Yadiel Hernandez, but retired CF Victor Robles to end the inning. RHP Trevor May came on in the top of the seventh and got into trouble and loaded the bases and was then taken out. RHP Jeurys Familia came in next and threw a wild pitch which brought in a run and then a two-run single to LF Andrew Stevenson. Familia was able to strike out 1B Ryan Zimmerman two batters later to keep the game tied. The Mets next game is tomorrow night at home against the Los Angeles Dodgers at 7:10 p.m.

Mets Beat Nationals 4-1 Behind a Strong Performance by Marcus Stroman and Brandon Nimmo

Mets RHP Marcus Stroman (Photo Credits to Getty Images) The New Yor Mets beat the Washington Nationals 4-1 this afternoon at Citi Field in the first game of a doublheader at Citi Field for their second consecutive win and improved their record to 58-55. After a scoreless bottom of the first inning, SS Jonathan Villar led off the bottom of the second witha single and then two batters RHP Marcus Stroman reached on a bunt single to third. CF Brandon Nimmo then came up and delivered a three-run homer. In the bottom of the fourth, RF Michael Conforto led off with a single and then catcher Tomas Nido followed with a single. Stroman struck out, but then Nimmo continued his strong day at the plate with a RBI single, his fourth RBI of the game. RHP Marcus Stroman had another strong start and started out well with five scoreless innings. Stroman ran into trouble in the top of the sixth after he gave up a lead-off walk to catcher Riley Adams and then a single to the following hitter pinch-hitter Andrew Stevenson. Stroman then gave up a RBI double to CF Victor Robles. Stroman came back to strike out SS Alcides Escobar and was then taken out. His final line was 5.1 innings, 3 hits, 1 run, 2 walks and 8 strikeouts. He picked up his eighth win. LHP Aaron Loup came in next and walked RF Juan Soto, but then got 1B Josh Bell to ground into a double play to end the inning. RHP Edwin Diaz came on and closed it out with a scoreless top of the seventh inning and picked up his 25th save. The Mets next game is about a half hour after the first game against the Nationals.

Mets Rally To Beat Nationals 8-7 And Overcome Two Three-Run Deficits

RHP Carlos Carrassco had a difficult start in the top of the first after he gave up a three-run homer to RF Juan Soto. RHP Rich Hill came in next in relief in the top of the second and gave up an RBI double to CF Victor Robles. Hill settled down after two scoreless innings in the top of the third and fourth innings, but gave up a two-run double to 2B Luis Garcia in the top of the fifth and was taken out. RHP Jeurys Familia followed and gave up a RBI single to catcher Riley Adams. RHP Miguel Castro followed with a scoreless top of the sixth. RHP Drew Smith then threw a scoreless top of the seventh. RHP Trevor May threw a scoreless top of the eighth and picked up his fifth win. RHP Edwin Diaz closed it out with a scoreless top of the ninth and picked up his 24th save. The offense got off to a fast start in the bottom of the first after 1B Pete Alonso and LF Dom Smith doubled to bring in a run. After a scoreless bottom of the second, CF Brandon Nimmo led off the bottom of the third with a double and then 2B Jeff McNeil followed with a RBI single. 1B Pete Alonso then reached on an infield hit and two batters later, RF Michael Conforto hit a RBI ground-out. 3B J.D. Davis then hit a RBI double to tie the game 4-4. The bats didn't do much for the next few innings until the bottom of the fifth after McNeil led off with a walk and later in the inning, Conforto drove in another with an RBI single. In the bottom of the seventh, Nimmo led off by reaching on an infield hit and two batters later, Alonso drove him in with a RBI double. In the following inning, Davis led off with a double and then SS Jonathan Villar hit a sacrifice bunt and reliever RHP Michael Thompson made a poor throw to first which allowed Davis to score. Two batters later, pinch-hitter Brandon Drury continued his torrid hitting off the bench with a pinch-hit RBI single. The Mets next game is tonight at home against the Nationals.
