Mets Lose to Reds 3-2 In Brandon Sproat's Debut After Ninth-Inning Rally Comes up Short

The New York Mets lost to the Cincinnati Reds 3-2 this afternoon at Great American Ball Park to lose two out of three games in the series and dropped their record to 76-67.

RHP Brandon Sproat made his MLB debut and started out well with three scoreless innings.

In the bottom of the fourth, Sproat walked RF Noelvi Marte who then stole second and advanced to third on a ground-out and then gave up a sacrifice fly to 3B Ke'Bryan Hayes.

Sproat had a scoreless bottom of the fith and took a no-hitter into the bottom of the sixth and then gave up a bloop single to Marte and then gave up a RBI double to SS Ella De La Cruz and a RBI single to DH Austin Hays,

Sproat finished up striking out the last two hitters he faced and was then taken out.

His final line was six innings, three hits, three runs, four walks and seven strikeouts.

He had an impressive debut and showed off his arsenal of pitches with his fastball, slider, sweeper and curveball and fastball topped out at 97 mph.

RHP Reed Garrett followed with a scoreless bottom of the seventh.

RHP Tyler Rogers came in next and threw a scoreless bottom of the eighth.

The Met offense was stymied by Reds ace RHP Hunter Greene who had a dominating outing with 12 strikeouts allowing one hit and one run on a solo homer by 3B Brett Baty.

The offense came alive in the top of  the ninth after RF Juan Soto hit a solo homer with one out and then Alonso reached on an error by De La Cruz.

LF Brandon Nimmo followed with a single, but then DH Starling Marte grounded out into a double play to end the game.

The Mets next game is tomorrow night, Monday, September 8 at the Philadelphia Phillies at 6:45 p.m.
