The New York Mets beat the San Diego Padres 8-3 tonight at Citi Field for their second consecutive win and improved their record to 78-73.

The Met offense got off to a fast start in the bottom of the first after SS Francisco Lindor led off with a homer and then RF Juan Soto and 1B Pete Alonso followed with singles to load the bases.

LF Brandon Nimmo then drove in Lindor with a RBI single. DH Mark Vientos followed by grounding into a double play, but then 2B Jeff McNeil hit a two-run double on the first pitch he saw and 3B Brett Baty followed with a two-run homer.

In the bottom of the second, Lindor hit a solo homer and two batters later, Alonso hit a solo homer.

In the bottom of the fourth, CF Cedric Mullins led off with a homer.

RHP Clay Holmes started out well with a 1-2-3 top of the first and then gave up a solo homer to CF Jackson Merrill in the top of the second.

Holmes gave up another solo homer this time to SS Jake Croneworth in the top of the third and then threw a scoreless top of the fourth and was taken out after the inning.

Holmes's final line was 4.0 innings, three hits, two runs, one walk and two strikeouts.

LHP Sean Manaea followed in the top of the fifth piggybacking off Holmes and did a fine job throwing scoreless innings in the top of the fifth, sixth and seventh.

Manaea gave up a solo homer to catcher Freddy Fermin in the top of the eighth and closed it out with a scoreless top of the ninth.

Manaea's final line was five innings, four hits, one run, 0 walks and four strikeouts.

He picked up his second win.

The Mets next game is tomorrow night, Wednesday, September 17 at home against the Padres at 7:10 p.m.
