LHP Sean Manaea got off to a tough start in the bottom of the first after he gave up a lead-off homer to LF Jackson Churio.
Manaea was able to settle down after that with scoreless innings in the bottom of the second, third and fourth, but then ran into trouble in the bottom of the fifth.
Manaea gave up a lead-off double to 2B Brice Tarang and after a ground-out by Chourio, he then gave up a sac fly to CF Blake Perkins and was taken out after the inning.
Manaea's final line was five innings, six hits, two runs, 0 walks and four strikeouts.
RHP Reed Garrett followed with a scoreless bottom of the sixth.
RHP Ryne Stanek threw a scoreless bottom of the seventh.
RHP Phil Maton came on in the bottom of the eighth and gave up a lead-off homer to Churio and then a single to Perkins.
Maton was then able to get catcher Wilson Contreras to ground into a double play, but then gave up a single to SS Willy Adames and then allowed a two-run homer to pinch-hitter Garrett Mitchell.
The Met offense got on the board immediately in the top of the first after SS Francisco Lindor led off with a walk and two batters later, 3B Mark Vientos reached on an infield hit and LF Brandon Nimmo came through with a RBI single.
In the top of the second, RF Starling Marte reached on an error by RHP Frankie Montas with one out and then CF Tyrone Taylor followed with a single.
Catcher Francisco Alvarez then drove in Marte with a RBI single and Lindor followed with a sacrifice fly.
2B Jose Iglesias singled to load the bases, but Vientos flew out to right to end the threat.
The offense was not able to score any more runs wasting several scoring opportunities that could have put the game away.
They went 2-11 with runners in scoring position leaving nine runners on base.
The Mets next game is tomorrow night, Thursday, October 3 at the Brewers at 8:38 p.m.
