The New York Mets lost to the Miami Marlins 7-2 tonight to drop their record to 2-2. RHP Zack Wheeler made his first start since September 25, 2014. Wheeler had missed the last 2 years due to Tommy John surgery. Wheeler allowed five runs in four innings. He gave up 6 hits and 1 walk. He had four strikeouts. Wheeler threw 80 pitches and 54 of them were for strikes. It was an encouraging start for him after not having pitched for two years. He has good life on his fastball and command of his slider. He could build off this start and learn from it. After Wheeler was taken out, LHP Josh Smoker came in and unable to get out of the top of the fifth. He allowed two runs in 1/3 of an inning. He gave up 3 hits and 2 walks. RHP Rafael Montero appeared next and got the last out in the top of the fifth. Montero stayed in and pitched a scoreless top of the sixth and seventh inning. LHP Josh Edgin was the Mets last pitcher of the evening and pitched 2 scoreless innings in the top of the eigth and ninth innings.
The Mets offense had 9 hits, but scored only 2 runs. Curtis Granderson hit an RBI single in the first inning. LF Yoenis Cespedes hit his first homer of the season in the bottom of the eighth inning.
