The New York Mets beat the Milwaukee Brewers 3-2 tonight at Citi Field for their second consecutive win to take two out of three games in the series and improved their record to 50-38.
After a scoreless bottom of the first, LF Brandon Nimmo drove in the first run of the game with a solo homer in the bottom of the second.
The Met offense did not do much against former Met LHP Jose Quintana until the bottom of the sixth after DH Starling Marte reached on an infield hit with one out and then SS Francisco Lindor followed with a single.
RF Juan Soto then drove in Marte with a RBI single for the go-ahead run.
1B Pete Alonso followed with a RBI double to score Lindor for a much needed insurance run.
LHP David Peterson cruised through the first three innings, but was let down by his defense in the top of the fourth.
2B Brett Baty dropped a line drive to put runners on first and second with one out and then 3B Mark Vientos drove in front of Lindor which caused Lindor to get one out instead of two.
Peterson gave up an infield hit to 3B Caleb Durbin which allowed the tying run to score.
In the top of the fifth, Peterson was able to work around a lead-off double after Alonso made a strong to throw out SS Junior Ortiz at home.
Peterson had a scoreless top of the sixth and retired the first two hitters he faced in the top of the seventh, but then gave up a solo homer to 2B Andrew Monasterio and an infield hit to RF Sal Frelick and was taken out,
Peterson's final line was 6.2 innings, five hits, two runs, (one earned run), three walks and four strikeouts.
He picked up his sixth win and lowered his ERA to 3.18.
RHP Ryne Stanek followed and picked up the last out in the top of the seventh.
Stanek stayed in for the top of the eighth and had a dominating inning striking out the side.
RHP Edwin Diaz came on in the top of the ninth and after a strikeout, gave up a one-out single to pinch-hitter Christian Yelich.
Yelich tried to steal second and was originally ruled safe, but replay showed that catcher Luis Torrens throw and Lindor's tag beat Yelich to the bag for the second out of the inning,
Diaz then struck out pinch-hitter Brice Tarang to close it out for his 18th save of the season.
The Mets next game is tomorrow afternoon, Friday, July 4 for the first game of the second Subway Series of the series against the Yankees at Citi Field at 3:10 p.m.
