The New York Mets lost to the St. Louis Cardinals 6-3 for their second consecutive loss and dropped their record to 41-49. RHP Zack Wheeler had a strong start for the first five innings, but it all unraveled in the top of the sixth. Wheeler allowed a solo homer to SS Paul DeYoung and a RBI pitcher to Cardinals starter RHP Adam Wainright and then was taken out. He ended up allowing four runs on seven hits in 5 1/3 innings. He gave up four walks and had seven strikeouts. LHP Josh Edgin came in next and gave up a walk to 1B Matt Carpentar. RHP Hansel Robles followed and gave up a three run homer to LHP Tommy Pham. RHP Paul Sewald pitched a scoreless top of the seventh inning. LHP Jerry Blevins pitched a scoreless top of the eighth inning. RHP Erik Goedell pitched a scoreless top of the ninth inning.
The Mets offense was scoreless until the bottom of the fifth inning when CF Michael Conforto hit a solo homer. 1B Lucas Duda also hit a solo homer in the bottom of the sixth inning. SS Jose Reyes came around to score on a double after two errors by outfielders Dexter Fowler and Magnerius Sierra.
