Mets Promote RHP Paul Sewald

The New York Mets announced last night that they have called up RHP reliever Paul Sewald from Triple-A Las Vegas. They have sent down utility man Ty Kelly in order to make room for Sewald on the 40-man roster. Sewald went to San Diego St and was drafted by the Mets in the 10th round of the 2012 draft. He has an ERA of 2.19, 1.03 WHIP, 66 saves and a 5.17 strikeout/walk ratio over a total of 258 innings in the minor leagues. Last year for Triple A Las Vegas, Sewald had an ERA of 3.29, a 1.20 WHIP and 80 strikeouts in 65.2 innings. His best pitches are his slider and fastball, which he can throw from 88-92 mph. Sewald is a control pitcher and has walked only 2.1 batters per nine innings in his minor league career. This is a good move by the Mets since they've used a lot of pitchers in the bullpen. Hopefully Sewald can help solidify the 7th and 8th innings and give Manager Terry Collins another option to use late in games.

Seth Lugo Has A UCL Tear in elbow

Earlier today, it was announced that New York Mets RHP Seth Lugo has a slight tear on the ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) on his right elbow. Lugo will not need to have surgery, but he has gotten a PRP injection in his elbow and has been advised to rest his arm. While pitching in the World Baseball Classic in March for Puerto Rico, Lugo felt arm fatigue after one of his starts. He threw a total of 26.1 innings between Spring Training and the World Baseball Classic. This is unfortunate but fortunately the Mets have other starters to fill in during Lugo's absence, such as RHP Rafael Montero.
