Mets Beat Rangers 4-1 Powered By Escobar and Marte

The New York Mets beat the Texas Rangers 4-1 this afternoon at Citi Field to take two out of three games in the series and improved their record to 49-30.

The offense got on the board early once again in the bottom of the first after RF Starling Marte hit a solo homer, his second consecutive game with a solo homer in the bottom of the first.

After scoreless innings in the bottom of the second and third, 1B Pete Alonso led off the bottom of the fourth and struck out, but reached second on a throwing error by catcher Jonah Heim and then LF Jeff McNeil followed with a RBI double.

3B Eduardo Escobar followed with a two-run homer and continued his stellar series with a homer in three consecutive games and now has nine homers.

RHP Carlos Carrasco started out well with two scoreless innings, but gave up a solo homer to Heim in the top of the third.

Carrasco settled down after that with a strong start allowing one run on six hits in 5.2 innings. Carrasco gave up one walk with eight strikeouts to pick up his ninth win and lowered his ERA to 4.64.

LHP Joely Rodriguez followed with 1.1 scoreless innings.

RHP Adam Ottavino threw a scoreless top of the eighth.

RHP Edwin Diaz closed it out with a scoreless top of the ninth and picked up his 18th save.

 The Mets next game is tomorrow night, Monday July 4th at the Cincinnati Reds at 6:40 p.m.

Mets Lose To Rangers 7-3 After Trevor Williams Struggles

 The New York Mets lost to the Texas Rangers 7-3 this afternoon at Citi Field and dropped their record to 48-30.

RHP Trevor Williams started out well with a scoreless top of the first, but ran into trouble in the top of the second after he gave up a lead-off walk to CF Adolis Garcia and then two batters later gave up a double to DH Mitch Gardner.

Williams then gave up back-to-back homers on a three-run homer by RF Kyle Calhoun and a solo homer to the following hitter to catcher Jonah Heim.

Williams did not allow any more runs in the inning and had a scoreless top of the third, but in the top of the fourth he gave up a solo homer to Calhoun, his second of the day and was taken out in the middle of the inning.

His final line was 3.2 innings, five hits, five runs, one walk and three strikeouts with three homers allowed.

LHP Chasen Shreve came in next and got the last out in the top of the fourth.

RHP Adonis Medina followed with two scoreless innings in the top of the fifth and sixth.

LHP Joely Rodriguez threw a scoreless top of the seventh and came back for the top of the eighth, but gave up a lead-off walk to 3B Josh Smith and was then taken out.

RHP Tommy Hunter came in next and after retiring 2B Marcus Semien on a fly-out, he gave up a RBI single to SS Corey Seager.

Hunter stayed in for the top of the ninth and gave up a solo homer to CF Leody Tavaras.

The offense got off to a fast start in the bottom of the first after CF Brandon Nimmo led off with an infield single and then RF Starling Marte followed with a two-run homer.

After scoreless innings in the bottom of the second and third, 3B Eduardo Escobar led off the bottom of the fourth with a solo homer and has homered in consecutive games for the first time all year and now has eight homers.

The bats did not do much after that and wasted several opportunities with runners in scoring position.

They were 0-8 with runners in scoring position (RISP) and left seven runners on base.

The Mets next game is tomorrow afternoon, Sunday July 3rd at home against the Rangers at 1:40 p.m.

 The New York Mets beat the Texas Rangers 4-3 tonight at Citi Field to snap their three-game losing streak and improved their record to 48-29.

The offense were held scoreless for the three innings against RHP Glenn Otto, but came alive in the bottom of the fourth.

SS Francisco Lindor led off with a single and two batters later DH Jeff McNeil walked.

LF Mark Canha followed with a RBI single and after 2B Luis Guillorme grounded out, 3B Eduardo Escobar came up and finally delivered after a lengthy slump with a three-run homer. It was a much needed homer for Escobar considering how much he has been struggling at the plate and hopefully he can build off this and start to hit like he was expected to.

LHP David Peterson cruised through the first two innings, but in the top of the third, he gave up a solo homer to 2B Marcus Semien.

Peterson was able to settle down after that in the third and had a scoreless top of the fourth.

He gave up a solo homer to 1B Nathaniel Lowe in the top of the fifth and ran into trouble in the top of the sixth after he gave up a lead-off single to Semien and then Semien advanced to second on a fielder's choice.

Peterson made a poor throw on a pick-off attempt which allowed Semien to advance to third and then gave up a RBI ground-out to RF Adolis Garcia and was taken out after the inning.

His final line was six innings, five hits, three runs, no walks and a career-high 10 strikeouts.

Peterson had stellar command of all his pitches once again especially with his slider and fastball. 

He picked up his sixth win.

RHP Seth Lugo followed with a scoreless top of the seventh.

RHP Adam Ottavino threw a scoreless top of the eighth.

RHP Edwin Diaz closed it out with a scoreless top of the ninth and picked up his 17th save.

The Mets next game is tomorrow afternoon, Saturday June 2nd at home against the Rangers at 4:10 p.m.

 New York Mets RHP Chris Bassitt was placed on the IL today for a non-injury issue. 

This means that it most likely related to COVID-19.

RHP R.J. Alvarez was selected from Triple-A Syracuse.
