Mets Beat Astros 3-1 For First Win of Season Powered by Soto First Homer

The New York Mets beat the Houston Astros 3-1 tonight at Dalkin Park and improved their record to 1-1.

After a scoreless top of the first, LF Brandon Nimmo singled to lead off the top of the second and then reached second on an error by 2B Brendan Rodgers.

3B Mark Vientos followed with a RBI double and then DH Jesse Winker followed with a RBI single.

In the top of the third, RF Juan Soto hit a towering solo homer to right field for his first homer as a Met that went 390 feet.

RHP Tylor Megill had three scoreless innings and then ran into trouble in the bottom of the fourth.

Megil gave up back-to-back singles to LF Jose Altuve and 3B Isaac Paredes and then gave up a sacrifice fly to LF Yordan Alvarez.

Megill was able to recover after that by getting out of the jam and then threw a scoreless bottom of the fifth.

Megill got into immediate trouble in the bottom of the sixth after CF Jake Myers reached on a wild pitch and then Altuve followed with a single and was then taken out.

Megill's final line was 5.0 innings, three hits, one run, one walk and six strikeouts.

He picked up first win and had sharp command on his slider and good life on baseball.

RHP Reed Garrett followed and struck out Paredes and then walked Alvarez to load the bases.

Garrett came back to struck out 1B Christian Walker and retire catcher Yainer Diaz on a fly out to center to end the inning.

LHP A.J. Minter followed in the bottom of the seventh for his Met debut and threw a scoreless inning.

RHP Ryne Stanek threw a scoreless bottom of the eighth.

RHP Edwin Diaz came on in the bottom of the ninth and closed it out with a 1-2-3 inning to pick up his first save of the season.

The Mets next game is tomorrow night, Saturday, March 29 at the Astros at 7:15 p.m.
