1. First Base- Early in the offseason it looked as if the Mets would cut ties with the underperforming duo of Davis and Duda. When it was made clear to fans that a legitimate suitor had not been found, the Mets set the two up for competition this spring. Nearly two and a half weeks in, neither have played more than three games. Injuries have taken their toll on the two, and neither seem to have a leg up on the other. Both hope to be ready by thursday, but with about a week and a half left, what can they prove? This question has NOT been answered this spring.
2. Short Stop- Unlike first base, there is no real competition at this position. Sure the Mets have teased us with Wilmer Flores, but he doesn't appear to be a real candidate at the position. Unless Drew is signed, and that is not likely, and Tejada doesn't get injured, Tejada will be the team's short stop come March 31. The only problem is, Ruben has been so bad this spring, we still have the same question heading into opening day as we did heading into spring...can he even play in the major leagues? This question has NOT been answered this spring.
3. 5th Starter- Many fans wanted Noah Syndergaard or Rafael Montero to take this job, but that wasn't likely to happen. In fact, both have been reassigned to minor league camp today. Instead, Mejia, Lannon, and Dice-K will continue to battle down the stretch of spring, with Dice-K having the clear upper hand...and he hasn't even been that good. Ouch. This question is moving forward, but has still yet to be answered.
4. Center Field- Center field is a position where the Mets actually have two competitors performing well, and still battling it out. Juan Lagares has been hitting well and that may be all manager Terry Collins needs to name Juan the opening day center fielder. Eric Young Junior is very capable of being the team's 4th outfielder. This is a good question to have, as competition is bringing out the best of both men. Looks like it will be Juan on opening day. Either way, both are playing well.
