Mets Sign Max Scherzer

Mets RHP Max Scherzer (Photo Credits to Richard Mackson-USA Today Sports) The New York Mets signed RHP Max Scherzer to a three-year $130 million contract. Scherzer has a opt-out after his second year as well as a no-trade clause. He has won three Cy Young Awards, five-more top 10 Cy Young finishes as well as eight All-Star game appearances. He also has thrown two no-hiters and had a 20 stirkeout game. Scherzer started his career with the Arizona Diamondbacks and was then traded to the Detriot Tigers. He pitched for the Tigers from 2010-2014 where he won his first Cy Young Award in 2014. He signed with Washington Nationals in 2015 and won two more Cy Young awards and helped led them to their first World Series title in 2019. Scherizer was traded by the Washington Nationals at the 2021 trading deadline to the Los Angeles Dodgers and was named Sporting News NL Starting Pitching of the Year and came in third in the NL Cy Young Award voting. This is the biggest signing for the Mets in the Steve Cohen ownership era and after they signed OF Starting Marte, OF/1B Mark Canha and 3B Eduardo Escobar last week they are finally starting to make moves like he promised when he took over as owner last offseason.

Mets Sign Outfielder Starling Marte To a Four-Year Deal

Mets outfielder Starling Marte (Photo Credits to MetsMerizedOnline.com) The New York Mets signed outfielder Startling Marte tonight to a four-year, $78 million deal pending a physical. Marte is the third player that the Mets have signed today after they signed Eduardo Escobar and Mark Canha earlier in the day. He has won two Gold Glove Awards in his career and was named to the National League All-Star team in 2016. Marte led the Majors with 47 steals last year. He will most likely be the everyday centerfielder which would allow Brandon Nimmo to move to one of the corner outfield spots in left or right field.

Mets outfielder Mark Canha (Photo Credits to MetsMerizedOnline.com) The New York Mets signed outfielder Mark Canha tonight to a two-year $26.5 million deal with a third-year deal. Canha hit .231 with 17 homers and 61 runs batted in for the Oakland Athletics. He had his best season in 2019 hitting .273 with 26 homers and 58 runs batted in with a career-high on base percentage of .396. Canha is primarily an outfielder and has played 488 games there in his career, but can also play first base as well. With the signing of Eduardo Escobar and Canda, the Mets are rebuilding their roster and emphasizing on players that are versatile who can play multiple positions.

Mets infielder Eduardo Escobar (Photo Credits to Micheal McLoone-USA Today Sports) The New York Mets signed infielder Eduardo Escobar tonight to a two-year, $20 million deal with a third-year option. Last year, Escobar hit .254 with 28 homers and 90 runs batted in with the Arizona Diamondbacks and Milwaukee Brewers and was named to the 2021 National League All-Star team. Escobar will play third base primarily, but is known for his versatility, and can play second baseman, shortstop as well the outfield. This is a solid move and Esbobar will provide power and defense as well as the ability to play multiple positions.

Mets Hire Billy Eppler As General Manager

Mets General Manager Billy Eppler (Photo Credits to MetsMerizedOnline.com) The New York Mets announced tonight that that officially hired Billy Eppler as their next general manager and gave him a four-year contract. Eppler was previously the general manager of the Los Angeles Angels from 2015-2020. Some of his most prominent moves with the Angels include signing pitcher/outfielder Shohei Ohtani and giving star outfielder Mike Trout a contract extension. While with the Angels, he also pulled over several trades bringing back players such as Andrelton Simmons, Max Stassi and Tommy La Stella. Prior to the Angels, Eppler worked for the New York Yankees where he began career there as a scout and was later promoted to director of professional scouting department. Eppler then worked his way to Assistant General Manager during the 2011-2012 offseason and worked with general manager Brian Cashman. He has a lot of work to imporve the franchise's major and minor league roster but he has the experience of running the front office and understands the pressure of working in New York.
