In a column for today's paper, Joel Sherman of the NY post said it's time the Mets give up on veteran starters Bartolo Colon, Jon Neise, and Dillon Gee. To add, Sherman suggests the Mets trade second baseman Daniel Murphy, as well.
Joel Sherman essentially suggests that in order for the Mets escape a Groundhog's Day or repeated failure, they have to trade pitching to get an influx of impact hitters. To quote, Sherman says the Mets need players "who will help no later than next year."
Sherman has a point. He was also the writer who suggested that when the Mets were flirting with .500, a few weeks ago, Sandy should have gone "all in" and did everything he can to bring a postseason birth back to Queens.
I didn't disagree with this point. As a fan, I'm dying to see my Mets make it back into the playoffs. But as what cost? The future? Sandy Alderson does not strike me as a general manager who will hit the panic button for good or for bad. Instead, Sandy is sticking to his plan of building young pitching, acquiring bats in the draft (see this year's acquisition of outfielder Michael Conforto) and building a defensive minded ball-club.
As Sherman points out in his article, which you can read here: (http://nypost.com/2014/06/18/mets-should-react-now-sell-off-useful-veterans/), Sandy and his regime have found their most success in the trade market. Carlos Beltran and R.A. Dickey were maximized in deals to net Noah Syndergaard, Zack Wheeler, and Travis d'Arnaud. With the July 31st deadline just around the corner, maybe it is time for Sandy to trade some of his "veteran" starters and net some young, under contract hitters to plug some holes in a weak lineup.
Next year's rotation should include Matt Harvey, Zack Wheeler, Jacob deGrom, Rafael Montero, and Noah Syndergaard. What becomes of Neise, Gee, or Colon? I believe it is in Sandy's best interest to trade them and take a gamble on a young rotation primed for the Big Apple.
