Mets vs. Cardinals Game 2 Recap

Mets RHP Jacob deGrom


The New York Mets defeated the St. Louis Cardinals 6-2 this afternoon for their second consecutive win to start the season. RHP Jacob deGrom pitched well even though didn't have his best stuff allowing one run on four hits in 5 2/3 innings. deGrom gave up one walk with seven strikeouts and picked up his first win. RHP Robert Gsellman came in next and struck out Jose Martinez to end the top of the sixth inning and picked up the first out in the top of the seventh inning, but was taken out after allowing back-to-back singles to catcher Yadier Moliana and SS Paul DeJong. RHP Anthony Swarsak followed and struck out pinch-hitter Greg Garcia and got CF Dexter Fowler to fly out to end the seventh. Swarsak stayed in for the top of the eighth inning and gave up a homer to 3B Matt Carpenter and then was taken out after he walked 1B Jose Martinez 1B Jose Martinez. Closer Jeurys  Familia came in next and closed it out with a four-run save, his first on the season.

3B Todd Frazier drove in the first two runs of the game with a two-run double in the bottom of the first inning. Catcher Travis d'Arnaud hit a solo homer in the bottom of the fourth inning. LF Yoenis Cespedes also hit a solo homer in the bottom of the fifth inning. Frazier drove in another run with a sacrifice run in the bottom of the seventh inning. 3B Asdrubal Cabrera added a RBI double in the bottom of the eighth inning.

The Mets next game is tomorrow at 1:10 P.M. against the Cardinals and will look for the three-game sweep.

Mets vs. Cardinals Game 1 Recap

New York Mets RHP Noah Syndergarrd

The New York Mets defeated the St. Louis Cardinals 9-4 today and improved their record on Opening Day to 37-20 overall. RHP Noah Syndergarrd had a great outing in his first start since April 30, 2017. Syndergarrd gave up four runs on six hits in six innings. He had 10 strikeouts and no walks. Thor is the first Mets pitcher since Pedro Martinez to have 10 strikeouts on Opening Day and has had seven career starts with 10 strikeouts and no walks, which is second all-time in Mets history behind Tom Seaver. RHP Robert Gsellman came in next and had a dominating seventh inning after he struck out the side. RHP Anthony Swarsak followed with a scoreless top of the eighth inning. RHP Jeurys Familia closed it out with a scoreless top of the ninth inning.

LF Yoenis Cespedes led the offense with three RBI's including a go-ahead two-run single in the bottom of the second inning. 1B Adrian Gonzalez had a nice debut after he went 2 for 3 with a RBI, runs scored and two walks. Catcher Kevin Plawecki had his first Opening Day start and had two hits, two walks, two runs, and an RBI. SS Amed Rosario had two hits with two RBI's. CF Brandon Nimmo went 2-3 with a walk, HBP and two runs scored in the lead-off spot.

The Mets next game is in Saturday, March 31st against the Cardinals at 1:10 P.M.
